Project Title: Girls on the Run Programming to Meet the Current Physical and Mental Health Needs of Adolescent Girls
Project Description:
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based youth development program designed to enhance the social, emotional, and physical skills of girls to successfully navigate life experiences. Trained volunteer coaches deliver the life skills curriculum by guiding small teams of girls through twice-a-week lessons that promote social-emotional learning concurrently with physical activity. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and completing a 5K.
We offer two programs two-10 week seasons: Girls on the Run for participants in grades 3-5 and Heart & Sole for participants in grades 6-8. Girls on the Run focuses on building self-worth and empathy, setting and achieving goals, and activating individual star power through team-building activities. Heart & Sole emphasizes the whole girl by focusing on the body, brain, heart, spirit; connection with others to develop a strong support system, foster healthy relationships, inspire intentional goal setting and decision making, and empower our young generation to be active in embracing differences and strengthening the many communities in their lives.
We also offer a junior coach program for high school juniors and seniors who want to grow their leadership skills and better understand the importance of helping a community provide positive youth development programming. Paired with a mentor coach, junior coaches receive support to develop their personal leadership skills while serving as role models and peer mentors to participants. Mentor coaches model an open relationship with their junior coach based on honesty and encouragement.
Girls on the Run Rhode Island is seeking support to bring our research-driven program to participants from historically marginalized communities with limited access to high impact out-of-school time programs. Communities continue to have an overwhelming need for physical activity and social-emotional learning opportunities and Girls on the Run is committed to being available to and inclusive of all girls.
