Project Title: Building Home Libraries and Providing Virtual Reading Mentors for Low-Income Students
Project Description:

Our Kids Read is looking to break cycles of poverty within under-served communities by creating a national, sustainable VIRTUAL reading program for 6-9 year old’s (administered via Microsoft Teams). By facilitating 1:1 remote reading programs and donating thousands of books to U.S. schools featuring Latino, African-American, Native-American and Southeast Asian characters to children in grades pre-K through 12th grade, we connect children and communities to diverse books and reading programs that foster literacy, achievement and a positive self-view. Over the past 18 months, Our Kids Read has served over 26,000 students.

Our Kids Read supports two core programs: Free Book Festivals and 1:1 Reading Buddy programs.

For the after school reading program pilots we’ve run so far in Columbus, Ohio, Charlotte North Carolina and Harlem, NY we’ve seen improvements in: Vocabulary, Reading proficiency and Engagement (96% student attendance).

With the Free Book Festivals, OKR partners nationally with local organizations, authors and donors to bring thousands of books to K-5th grade students. We hire local storytellers and musicians to bring stories from around the world to life, then allow youth participants to pick 2-3 free books from our book tables of hundreds of books and up to 100 unique titles to choose from across all K-5th grade reading levels.

With OKR’s 1:1 Reading Buddy Program, OKR matches adult readers with children in the under-served communities we work with for virtual 1:1 mentoring and reading sessions (over Teams and Zoom). Each session is 45-minutes, once or twice per week for 12 weeks. Both mentorship and literacy are goals of the program.

Project Title: Creative and Visual Arts After-School Programming for Youth in Charlotte, NC
Project Description:

The Lorien Academy of the Arts (LAA) provides two programs to low- and moderate-income youth in Charlotte, North Carolina. At LAA, art programming is designed to equip, encourage, and empower our students to rise out of poverty. Through two distinct programs, Art Clubs (during the school year) and Art Camps (during the summer), we train our students in various art mediums, from photography, painting, digital illustration and drawing. As a Title 1 school, we serve more than 35% of low-income students in Charlotte.

LAA aims to increase the capacity of our after-school programming to reach more students in our city. Most schools too easily ignore inequitable access to art. The outcome gaps in low- and high-income household children begin early and persist through adulthood. Sound and effective investments in the education of low-income children are some of the most effective means of improving economic mobility rates and decreasing equity.

Lorien Academy addresses this issue by providing art education and experiences to develop students’ skills and mindsets for future success. Increasing our capacity allows us to provide a broader range of students training in various visual and performing art disciplines they would otherwise not have access to. When arts education is administered equitably, the gap between low-income and high-income students begins to close, and our students begin to naturally develop what we call the 3 Cs– creativity, confidence, and critical thinking. Cultivating The 3 C’s empowers youth to dream bigger and encourages them to pursue those dreams while equipping them to succeed in making them a reality!

Project Title: Walk-in Freezer to serve MMBB Mission
Project Description:

The Milk Bank for Babies (MMBB) mission is to improve infant health outcomes by ensuring that medically vulnerable babies in MN and the Upper Midwest have access to safely pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) when mother’s milk is unavailable or in low supply. MMBB is the sole distributor of PDHM in Minnesota, and in the last four years, we have witnessed a steady increase in the number of milk donors, milk recipients, distribution sites, milk depots, and bottles of milk dispensed. Since 2020, we have distributed over 824,817 oz. of milk, all generously provided by 1,257 donors to 33 hospitals across the region. As the demand for PDHM grows, a larger facility is needed. With our lease expiring in March 2024, we’ve secured a new site in Roseville. Construction is underway however, we still need additional equipment to respond to the increased need in the community specifically an additional Walk-in freezer box – ($36,000) to increase our capacity to enable efficient storage, inventory management, and distribution of milk while complying with health and safety standards.
