Project Title: Creative and Visual Arts After-School Programming for Youth in Charlotte, NC
Project Description:

The Lorien Academy of the Arts (LAA) provides two programs to low- and moderate-income youth in Charlotte, North Carolina. At LAA, art programming is designed to equip, encourage, and empower our students to rise out of poverty. Through two distinct programs, Art Clubs (during the school year) and Art Camps (during the summer), we train our students in various art mediums, from photography, painting, digital illustration and drawing. As a Title 1 school, we serve more than 35% of low-income students in Charlotte.

LAA aims to increase the capacity of our after-school programming to reach more students in our city. Most schools too easily ignore inequitable access to art. The outcome gaps in low- and high-income household children begin early and persist through adulthood. Sound and effective investments in the education of low-income children are some of the most effective means of improving economic mobility rates and decreasing equity.

Lorien Academy addresses this issue by providing art education and experiences to develop students’ skills and mindsets for future success. Increasing our capacity allows us to provide a broader range of students training in various visual and performing art disciplines they would otherwise not have access to. When arts education is administered equitably, the gap between low-income and high-income students begins to close, and our students begin to naturally develop what we call the 3 Cs– creativity, confidence, and critical thinking. Cultivating The 3 C’s empowers youth to dream bigger and encourages them to pursue those dreams while equipping them to succeed in making them a reality!
