Project Title: Providing the partnership of horses and humans
Project Description:

Wings of Hope was founded in 1996 to provide inclusion for those with disabilities, specifically for children and adults with physical, mental, or emotional challenges through the partnership of a horse. This partnership allows clients the opportunity to explore new ways to navigate independence, gain tools and skills to sharpen and enhance abilities, discover strengths, and address challenges. The partnership breaks down barriers for someone who has experienced isolation and exclusion through their disability. We serve as an advocate for meeting individuals where they are in life with a focus on abilities rather than disabilities.

So often those impacted by our mission find that they do not have an outlet that allows them to be comfortable and confident with their disability. Frequently, individuals with disabilities state that life can revolve around a diagnosis, the label, and the stigma that comes with it. Living in exclusion is not a way of life any person or family should have to endure. Time after time we hear stories of how clients served are not able to play a team sport, they are not invited to birthday parties, or included in typical childhood or adult peer networks.

Wings of Hope provides services through three programs, Therapeutic Riding, Ground-based lessons, and Equine Discovery.

Therapeutic Riding is horseback riding for individuals seeking physical benefits and movement from the horse to improve gait, flexibility, balance, focus, and communication.

Ground-based lessons are offered to build self-confidence, trust, and respect for themselves while learning to effectively communicate and bond with a horse. Through ground-based activities, individuals address areas associated with anxiety management, stress, reintegration, communication, and conflict resolution.

Equine Discovery is for individuals seeking interaction in a peer group setting such as team building or field trips. Improvement of confidence, communication, and self-awareness is achieved through the observation of communication and social skills as learned by the herd.

Project Title: BreatheStrong Recreation Grants
Project Description:

Miles for Cystic Fibrosis in partnership with Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation (M4CF/CFLF) advances the physical and mental wellness of the cystic fibrosis (CF) community through education, direct support, and empowering opportunities. We are an Atlanta-based 501(c)3 organization established in 2013 that promotes healthy and active lifestyles by providing BreatheStrong Grants of up to $750 to members of the national CF community.

CF is a progressive, genetic disease impacting nearly 40,000 individuals nationally. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CF pulmonologists promote exercise as part of the CF treatment plan.

BreatheStrong recreation grants can provide bicycles, trampolines, gym memberships, sports league fees, lessons, etc. to those with CF. Recipients range in age from 6 months to 65 with many of our applicants being under 21. Grants are paid directly to the program or retailer from which services/products are purchased. Individuals with CF are encouraged to apply annually with a focus on renewal grants to sustain and support their active lifestyle.

Exercise can positively impact quality of life by improving lung function, reducing stress, depression, and anxiety, and managing diabetes. Psychologically, exercise and activity help normalize the lives of CF patients. As the CF community shifts from failure to thrive to over a third of the population experiencing weight complications, exercise can help reduce or maintain weight as well as improve muscle, heart, and bone health.

It must be noted that surviving and thriving with CF places a tremendous financial strain on families. Even with insurance, the expenses often leave little to no discretionary income. M4CF/CFLF hopes by providing BreatheStrong Grants, we can eliminate that financial barrier and help build healthy exercise habits.

Project Title: Math Matters Learning Acceleration Program
Project Description:

The Math Matters Learning Acceleration Program is a professional development model for teachers to learn and improve mathematics instruction in grades 6-8. The program addresses inequities in access to rigorous math instruction by ensuring all students are engaged in grade level instruction. Our skilled math coaches partner with teachers and leaders to advance teacher practice in alignment with 5 competencies: Inclusive classroom environments, Implementing rigorous and accessible tasks, Facilitating meaningful discussions, Using data effectively, and Pacing and prioritizing. The implementation of our program in eight schools last year led to measurable outcomes in improved teacher practice and student growth on screener assessments. In a previous iteration of Math Matters, 64% of students reached their objectives in the first year of the program while 71% of students met their goals in year two.

Teaching Matters will provide our Learning Acceleration program to approximately 10 middle schools throughout Manhattan, reaching 2,000 students. Almost all of these are Title I (high poverty) schools, and each has a high economic need index (87-93%) while 24% of the students are homeless or live in temporary housing. Each school will receive 20 days of on-site, job embedded coaching for teachers and leaders, focused on rigorous math instruction. Our approach improves mathematics instruction in schools through intensive job-embedded coaching. This work is grounded in a clear vision for rigorous math instruction that engages all students in meaningful learning, emphasizing building conceptual understanding as a necessary foundation for procedural fluency, and with attention to cultural responsiveness. We are focused on three main components of math instruction and support: Asking purposeful questions, facilitating small group instructional practices, and building alignment with high quality curriculum.

Requested Amount: $1,000

Project Title: Youth Programming
Project Description:

The mission of our organization is: Supporting the well-being of our youth by giving them opportunities to connect, grow and give back. We target ALL middle and high school youth in Darien, which means The Depot is an available resource to over 3,500 tweens and teens.

Darien is not insulated from the youth mental health crisis affecting our nation. As seen in the 2023 Thriving Youth Darien Survey, 1 in 4 high schoolers and 1 in 5 middle schoolers reported experiencing ongoing depression and anxiety. These numbers are higher for girls, and higher still for youth who identify as LGBTQ+. Additionally, the survey showed Darien’s teens report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days at a much higher rate than our surrounding towns by the time they are in 12th grade. Our youth are struggling and The Depot is one of the few places that they can find the support they need in an inclusive and safe environment. The Depot offers a wide range of diverse programming and peer connections that address these trends and assist teens and tweens with developing positive self-esteem and leadership skills, for example:

Our SADD and 8th grade SADD programs offer peer education about the pitfalls of destructive decisions and how to avoid them. Our high school and middle school events, such as high school Free Friday events, middle school themed parties, and end-of-year ice cream and pizza events for grades 4-12, offer drug- and substance-free alternatives for Darien’s youth, providing a safe environment and negating or delaying underage alcohol and substance use.

Clubs like empowHER and the Student League of Darien offer connections by having upperclassmen mentor 9th and 10th graders – helping them feel seen, and providing speakers on important topics like mental health, bystander intervention, and goal setting.

Research indicates that those who consistently help others experience less depression, greater calm, and better health. The Depot’s Volunteer Club, Helping Hands, Student Governing Board, and Smiles for Seniors are all rooted in the belief that giving back to our larger community is an important part of youth wellbeing.

We know from the results of the Thriving Youth Survey that Darien youth are struggling. The Depot strives to create an inclusive environment where our youth can connect, grow and give back.

Our middle school programs like The Challenge, Deep Roots, M3, Mind + Body Rowing, and Choose Love teach teamwork, self-care, mindfulness, kindness, and empathy at this critical period of tween development.

We offer support groups for LGBTQ+ youth through Kids in Crisis and for parents through NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, to provide comprehensive support to these youth and their families who are struggling.

Total Project Budget: $574,925

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): The majority of our funding comes from individuals. We are reaching out to Foundations to diversify our funding.

Project Title: Real Talk Podcast – Eosinophilic Education
Project Description:

The American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2001, is dedicated to passionately embracing, supporting, and improving the lives of patients and families affected by eosinophil-associated disorders through education, awareness, research, support, and advocacy. Eosinophilic (EOS) disorders display unusually high white blood cell counts and can lead to various symptoms, misdiagnoses, and delayed treatments due to challenges in diagnosing and their diverse manifestations. The community’s need for educational podcasts about eosinophilic disorders stems from a lack of awareness and understanding surrounding these often complex and relatively rare conditions.
In July 2021, APFED successfully launched the podcast series "Real Talk: Eosinophilic Diseases," which has quickly become a valuable educational resource within our community. These podcasts provide easily accessible, insightful discussions about living with eosinophil-associated disorders and empower listeners with the tools to manage their conditions effectively. Guests on the program include researchers, clinicians, patients, and community members, creating a well-rounded perspective.
Patients and caregivers in all stages of their journey with eosinophil-associated disease and anyone wishing to learn more about the topic are invited to join the meetings at no cost. Each podcast runs 20-30 minutes in length, depending on the subject matter, and is offered on a number of listening platforms, including Spotify and YouTube. Guest speakers are professionals in the field of eosinophilic disorders, and they facilitate focused discussions on topics of interest. Themes for each session are planned with input from members of our patient community to ensure we provide relevant and meaningful content to the audience.

I stay in a rural area and it’s hardly job , hardly transportation, which makes it hard for parents to be able to afford child care . So there are so many children suffering and falling behind for lack of education which is out of their control. I’ve been asking DHR for help but they seem to not care or maybe it’s the area .
