Project Title: BreatheStrong Recreation Grants
Project Description:

Miles for Cystic Fibrosis in partnership with Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation (M4CF/CFLF) advances the physical and mental wellness of the cystic fibrosis (CF) community through education, direct support, and empowering opportunities. We are an Atlanta-based 501(c)3 organization established in 2013 that promotes healthy and active lifestyles by providing BreatheStrong Grants of up to $750 to members of the national CF community.

CF is a progressive, genetic disease impacting nearly 40,000 individuals nationally. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CF pulmonologists promote exercise as part of the CF treatment plan.

BreatheStrong recreation grants can provide bicycles, trampolines, gym memberships, sports league fees, lessons, etc. to those with CF. Recipients range in age from 6 months to 65 with many of our applicants being under 21. Grants are paid directly to the program or retailer from which services/products are purchased. Individuals with CF are encouraged to apply annually with a focus on renewal grants to sustain and support their active lifestyle.

Exercise can positively impact quality of life by improving lung function, reducing stress, depression, and anxiety, and managing diabetes. Psychologically, exercise and activity help normalize the lives of CF patients. As the CF community shifts from failure to thrive to over a third of the population experiencing weight complications, exercise can help reduce or maintain weight as well as improve muscle, heart, and bone health.

It must be noted that surviving and thriving with CF places a tremendous financial strain on families. Even with insurance, the expenses often leave little to no discretionary income. M4CF/CFLF hopes by providing BreatheStrong Grants, we can eliminate that financial barrier and help build healthy exercise habits.
