Project Title: Math Matters Learning Acceleration Program
Project Description:

The Math Matters Learning Acceleration Program is a professional development model for teachers to learn and improve mathematics instruction in grades 6-8. The program addresses inequities in access to rigorous math instruction by ensuring all students are engaged in grade level instruction. Our skilled math coaches partner with teachers and leaders to advance teacher practice in alignment with 5 competencies: Inclusive classroom environments, Implementing rigorous and accessible tasks, Facilitating meaningful discussions, Using data effectively, and Pacing and prioritizing. The implementation of our program in eight schools last year led to measurable outcomes in improved teacher practice and student growth on screener assessments. In a previous iteration of Math Matters, 64% of students reached their objectives in the first year of the program while 71% of students met their goals in year two.

Teaching Matters will provide our Learning Acceleration program to approximately 10 middle schools throughout Manhattan, reaching 2,000 students. Almost all of these are Title I (high poverty) schools, and each has a high economic need index (87-93%) while 24% of the students are homeless or live in temporary housing. Each school will receive 20 days of on-site, job embedded coaching for teachers and leaders, focused on rigorous math instruction. Our approach improves mathematics instruction in schools through intensive job-embedded coaching. This work is grounded in a clear vision for rigorous math instruction that engages all students in meaningful learning, emphasizing building conceptual understanding as a necessary foundation for procedural fluency, and with attention to cultural responsiveness. We are focused on three main components of math instruction and support: Asking purposeful questions, facilitating small group instructional practices, and building alignment with high quality curriculum.
