Project Description:

Our Tutoring Achievement Program offers strategic academic instruction and guidance along with social-emotional development and awareness activities. Students will be provided the tools needed to close the significant academic gap between them and their peers. Highly trained staff will not only guide the students in their coursework but will also assist in their development of managing emotions, effective communication, and resilience. By offering tools for guidance and development, the child and youth in the program will establish an understanding for their course material without additional assistance, be prepared for upcoming classes and course material, become an independent learner, create meaningful relationships, develop problem solving skills, and be able to create and accomplish long-term goals and skills beyond their academic success. By creating resilient youth, the communities of Phoenix and surrounding areas will experience diminished juvenile delinquent activity and can create an environment of safety, security, and trust amongst its members.

Project Title: Research & Advocacy to support Connecticut children and families
Project Description:

We envision a thriving and equitable state where all children achieve their full potential. We are a research-based advocacy organization. Our research and recommendations are fundamental to family economic security and the undergirding fiscal and economic policy.

Our research focuses on tax reform and family economic security. Today, the state’s income and wealth divides are greater than ever, but so much of a child’s well-being is rooted in family economic security. Children cannot thrive unless families do, which is why CT Voices prioritizes affordable housing, criminal justice, and access to child care as well as the intersectional issues of health, child welfare, and education. CT Voices conducts research and analysis for investments in children and families as the primary budget priority, and we work with stakeholders and partners to advocate for a fair state tax system that supports children.

In 2025 we plan to release our annual State of Early Childhood and a tax/fiscal analysis for legislative session.

We’re researching and advocating for universal access to high-quality early child care for all CT residents, because early care and education (ECE) is essential to optimal child development. We know that the lack of ECE holds many parents back from work or other goals, the high cost of ECE puts many families in economic stress and ECE providers are underpaid, which contributes to high turnover rates and instability.

We research and advocate for tax reform to fund critical supports and services that aid family economic security. At the end of 2024 we will release a Tax & Budget paper. Following publication, we will advocate for our recommendations and hold forums and presentations to share our findings.

Our research and analysis helps policymakers be better advocates for children and supports advocates and organizations in their work to improve the lives of Connecticut children.

Project Title: Childcare Accounting Tuition
Project Description:

Our childcare center has served Northern Indiana for over 50 years, especially Spanish speakers, low-income, and children of Migrant workers. While serving the underserved, our center is also one of the highest in quality in the state. This allows the children in our care to break the cycle of poverty by getting the leg up they deserve before kindergarten and supporting working parents. We are proud to have a dedicated and diverse administrative team, including our Bookkeeper, Erika Madera. Erika first came to El Campito as a parent; Her son joined our youngest class 4 years ago. However, during Covid, she was laid off from her job as a teacher assistant. Our leadership heard about this hardship, saw her potential, and offered her a job as a Support Staff. She did the job diligently for two years while also being able to keep her son close by, a comfort to her as a single mother. When the job opened up for the Bookkeeper, she applied, with an honest disclaimer that she did not have experience in this type of work. However, we saw that she was a quick learner, a bright young woman, and someone deeply entrenched in the culture of our center who just needed the chance to succeed, so we invested that choice in her. She has been doing the job for a year and a half and has grown so much! She has learned from other accountants in the field and is ready for her certification in accounting. We found a local community college that would be perfect, but there are no scholarships for this kind of work available. Early childhood has many, but only for teaching. We are asking this: an investment in an education that will impact countless local families in accounting for non-profit childcare.

Project Title: School Uniform Program
Project Description:

Back to Basics is entering its 40th year as a nonprofit. We operate the School Uniform and Angel Programs. We are requesting funding for our School Uniform Program. This program provides school uniforms to students, which enables them to start the school year in a new uniform. We realize that many of these families do not have access to laundry facilities, so the students really need more uniforms to get them through the week before they can be cleaned. (something most of us take for granted!) Moving the Uniform Program forward, our goal is to expand the 20,000 uniform distributions annually to 40,000 over the next 3 years, so the children can continue to feel good about going to school every day.

This program focuses on a new uniform for the beginning of the school year in August. This initial expansion is targeted towards the seven elementary and one middle school located within the Glades communities of Palm Beach County.

Growing our donor base to raise an additional $80,000 each year and sustaining these donations annually is a challenge, but one that will allow for the purchase of an additional 6,700 uniforms yearly to reach our goal of an additional 20,000 uniforms over the next 3 years.

In 2023, there were 131,900 elementary and middle school students enrolled in PBC schools, of which 71,000 students qualified for free or reduced lunches. This is 54% of elementary and middle school children, and their families living at or below the poverty level. For these families, school clothing does not rise to the level of necessity. Our school uniform program meets this need by providing these students with the essential clothing that can afford them the opportunity to attend school with dignity and be ready to learn.

Total Project Budget: Uniform program $295,430.00

Project Title: Building Resiliency in Youth
Project Description:

Building Resiliency in Youth utilizes the "I Can Problem Solve" (ICPS) curriculum which is an evidence-based, primary prevention program that offers practical skills for helping children, in a school setting, learn how to think through and resolve everyday conflicts. Through various activities, children learn interpersonal cognitive problem-solving skills, including the ability to (1) identify a problem, (2) recognize thoughts, feelings and motives that generate interpersonal problem situations, (3) generate alternative solutions to problems, and (4) consider the consequences for these solutions. ICPS is implemented through weekly lessons using games, role-playing, group discussion, and educational worksheets to teach children communication and problem-solving skills and the thought processes necessary for good decision-making.
The proposed program will offer five hours per week of direct services at designated elementary or middle schools in Tempe. These direct hours will be spent delivering ICPS to students. Students identified as being “at risk” by the school staff will be referred to the EMPACT-SPC Prevention Specialist for small group support to focus on building resiliency and facilitating healthy coping skills. In addition, the Prevention Specialist will be available to the school counselor and classroom teachers as a resource for classroom management, classroom presentations, student intervention, and parent referrals. The proposed program will offer additional indirect services, which will be assigned for preparation time, phone consultation with staff, training, and supervision.
As reported by the CDC (2022), childhood is a critical time for shaping long-term health, and approximately 50% of all mental health disorders start before the age of 14. Therefore, in order to support lifelong mental health, it is crucial, according to the CDC, to "to prevent problems, identify concerns early, and provide effective treatment.” Therefore, the Building Resiliency in Youth life skills program has the opportunity to support mental health for children across the lifespan.
