Project Title: Childcare Accounting Tuition
Project Description:

Our childcare center has served Northern Indiana for over 50 years, especially Spanish speakers, low-income, and children of Migrant workers. While serving the underserved, our center is also one of the highest in quality in the state. This allows the children in our care to break the cycle of poverty by getting the leg up they deserve before kindergarten and supporting working parents. We are proud to have a dedicated and diverse administrative team, including our Bookkeeper, Erika Madera. Erika first came to El Campito as a parent; Her son joined our youngest class 4 years ago. However, during Covid, she was laid off from her job as a teacher assistant. Our leadership heard about this hardship, saw her potential, and offered her a job as a Support Staff. She did the job diligently for two years while also being able to keep her son close by, a comfort to her as a single mother. When the job opened up for the Bookkeeper, she applied, with an honest disclaimer that she did not have experience in this type of work. However, we saw that she was a quick learner, a bright young woman, and someone deeply entrenched in the culture of our center who just needed the chance to succeed, so we invested that choice in her. She has been doing the job for a year and a half and has grown so much! She has learned from other accountants in the field and is ready for her certification in accounting. We found a local community college that would be perfect, but there are no scholarships for this kind of work available. Early childhood has many, but only for teaching. We are asking this: an investment in an education that will impact countless local families in accounting for non-profit childcare.
