Project Title: Literacy
Project Description:

City Impact is a nonprofit organization that has been vital to the Lincoln community for the past 25 years.City Impact’s mission is to empower and equip kids and families to rise above vulnerable circumstances through a Christ-centered biblical worldview, radically transforming them into who God created them to be. With a biblical worldview, City Impact provides a haven for kids and families by offering various programs and services.

City Impact is vital to any city impact initiative, specifically emphasizing youth and breaking generational cycles. At the heart of our programs is recognizing that communities thrive when they support their most vulnerable members – kids and families facing challenging circumstances. A dedicated City Impact agency in Lancaster County has worked tirelessly for years to provide educational programs, counseling, and mentoring to those in need. CI Academy is centered on academic excellence and the holistic development of CI students. With high academic standards, the atmosphere fosters an environment conducive to intellectual growth. Parents and guardians entrust their children to CI Academy, knowing that a rigorous curriculum adheres to critical thinking skills and enriching programming. For 2021-2022, Lincoln Public Schools reported a decrease in reading levels of 3% for all students. (LPS.org, 2022). In an effort to combat this reading disparity, City Impact boasts a 35% increase in kids reading fluency from the beginning to the end of the program. Character building is emphasized and rooted in faith, where questions are encouraged, and discussions are held during daily devotionals for kindergarten to eighth-grade students.

Through our CI academy, caring teachers guide students through the summer reading challenge, where they embark on the thrilling adventure of exploring different books. This partnership with Lincoln Public School provides additional locations for students to complete activities and expand their knowledge.

Project Title: film workshops
Project Description:

Digg Site is organizing a two-day film camp exclusively for young people, and the best part is, it’s completely free for them to participate. The camp aims to allow youth to collaborate with and learn from local film experts. They will learn about cinematography and camera equipment, including equipment setup, understanding its functioning, the theoretical aspects of capturing a great shot, fulfilling the script and director’s requirements during filming, and acquiring practical skills to capture action on film effectively.

The camp will also feature professional film producers who will emphasize the significance of production and guide participants on how all elements come together on a film set. Alongside this, local professional directors will mentor youth in understanding the leadership role in filmmaking. To complete their learning experience, participants can work with professional editors who will demonstrate how footage from a movie shoot is transformed into a proper format through the editing process. All these activities will take place within an actual film set environment that fosters supportiveness, education, and competence. The ultimate goal is for participants to create a short movie that they can submit to film festivals worldwide as a finished product. After one month of completing their movie project at camp, participants and their families are invited back for a celebration event where they can showcase their hard work and achievements. This event serves as both recognition for their efforts and motivation for them to continue exploring artistry and finding success in their creative endeavors.

Film camps are not just about providing a fun and creative outlet for young aspiring filmmakers; they also have a significant economic impact by contributing to job creation. These camps play a vital role in nurturing talent and building essential skills in the film industry, ultimately leading to the growth of the sector. By offering hands-on training, film camps equip participants with the necessary technical knowledge and experience needed for various roles within the industry.

Project Title: Interpreter training
Project Description:

CLIA is a 501(c)3 organization that provides legal immigration assistance to clients in need. Our mission with this project is to offer legal and culturally appropriate mental health services to low-income immigrants and refugees.

With CARE: Culturally Adapted Rehabilitation and Empowerment for Immigrant Mental Health program at CLIA aims to address local issues in the Omaha, Lincoln area and rural clients across the state. Mental health professionals can guide and support clients through the process in a trauma- and culture-sensitive manner, avoiding possible re-traumatization. Our mental health program, Cultural Trauma Therapy Associates, is a psychological and wellness guide. It supports clients culturally sensitively to avoid re-traumatization.

We offer interpreter training and an interpreter in certain circumstances involving immigration for families and youth. The therapist must obtain witness statements in those cases to protect the victims. On average, we serve 800 clients annually and have at least 50 graduates from our interpreter training program. Our goal is to equip our graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to communicate with our clients in a culturally sensitive and effective manner. Our organization recognizes the significance of interpreter training in ensuring clients receive the best service. By equipping interpreters with comprehensive training programs, we can enhance their language skills, cultural competence, and understanding of mental health terminology.

As the immigrant population has grown in Nebraska to more than 145,000, CLIA strives to meet the demand for legal services throughout Nebraska. Project Title: STEM programming
Project Description:

The Malone Center, founded by the Lincoln Urban League and visionary leader Clyde Malone, has left an indelible legacy on the Malone community center. With a focus on empowering families, this organization has impacted the lives of over 1,000 children through its STEM curriculum. The Malone Center fosters a sense of freedom by providing students with a supportive environment and encouraging them to explore their potential. Through ten programs, it offers diverse learning experiences that equip youth with confidence and resilience.

As part of Malone’s commitment to equality, we host events and offer various programs and outlets for local youth to get involved in. Our primary program is our Out-Of-School program serving ages 5yrs – 12yrs. This program is a valuable opportunity for children to engage in STEAM learning and benefit from supportive learning spaces. These programs provide a safe and enriching environment for kids after the school day ends. With an average attendance of 65 youth, these programs cater to the needs of up to 120 youth, providing academic and social-emotional support, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. Participating in after-school programs at Malone helps prevent minority children living in poverty from being in the streets and engaging in risky behaviors, as they are exposed to a safe and supportive environment filled with enriching activities and resources.

We use a STEM curriculum along with applied learning experiences. The student learns in a safe, comfortable, supportive environment that allows them the freedom to learn at their pace. This allows youth to build confidence and resilience, enabling them to keep going when it gets rough. We offer STEM-based learning programs within our out-of-school Program and CLC to ensure the educational success of each youth served.

Project Title: Mental Health Wrap Around Education Support
Project Description:

Leadership. Education. Empower. Performance (L.E.E.P) To College Foundation (L2C) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2013 that levels the playing field for underrepresented youth by providing access to the same high-quality enrichment programs available to high-income families. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, mental health problems impact student’s energy level, concentration, dependability, mental ability, and optimism which hinders performance. This research shows that untreated mental health issues like anxiety and depression can negatively impact students’ grade point average – hindering academic performance and drive to pursue higher education. At L.E.E.P, we take a holistic approach to academic success by incorporating wrap-around mental health services including our L.I.G.H.T. (Living in Good Health Together) Summit, Mentorship Program, and our 10 Minutes for Me sessions. Our annual LIGHT Summit began in 2019, bringing youth from across Prince George’s County and Greater Washington, DC to engage in a day of activities and workshops geared toward positive mental health. Our 10 Minutes for ME program occurs monthly for participants to interact and engage with educators, psychologists, social workers, and partners for 10 minutes virtually. Each session provides insight, themes, and topics to motivate, empower, and educate our youth including strengthening family & community partnerships and nurturing individual well-being. Another cornerstone of our student support is our mentorship program in partnership with Ally Financial. This initiative pairs each of our high school scholars with an employee mentor from Ally for the full academic year. Pairs meet twice weekly to form meaningful connections that provide guidance and inspiration through a character-building social-emotional learning curriculum. Mentors draw from lived experiences to help mentees navigate the challenges of adolescence and planning for the future. Additionally, Ally hosts financial literacy workshops to expose scholars to diverse industries and professions.
