Project Title: Interpreter training
Project Description:

CLIA is a 501(c)3 organization that provides legal immigration assistance to clients in need. Our mission with this project is to offer legal and culturally appropriate mental health services to low-income immigrants and refugees.

With CARE: Culturally Adapted Rehabilitation and Empowerment for Immigrant Mental Health program at CLIA aims to address local issues in the Omaha, Lincoln area and rural clients across the state. Mental health professionals can guide and support clients through the process in a trauma- and culture-sensitive manner, avoiding possible re-traumatization. Our mental health program, Cultural Trauma Therapy Associates, is a psychological and wellness guide. It supports clients culturally sensitively to avoid re-traumatization.

We offer interpreter training and an interpreter in certain circumstances involving immigration for families and youth. The therapist must obtain witness statements in those cases to protect the victims. On average, we serve 800 clients annually and have at least 50 graduates from our interpreter training program. Our goal is to equip our graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to communicate with our clients in a culturally sensitive and effective manner. Our organization recognizes the significance of interpreter training in ensuring clients receive the best service. By equipping interpreters with comprehensive training programs, we can enhance their language skills, cultural competence, and understanding of mental health terminology.

As the immigrant population has grown in Nebraska to more than 145,000, CLIA strives to meet the demand for legal services throughout Nebraska. CLIA is proud to serve a diverse population of immigrants and refugees worldwide, primarily in Afghanistan, Iraq, Burma, and Africa. This year, we have served 781 clients from Mexico, Cuba, Central America, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Afghanistan, 51 citizenship applications have been completed, as well as 96 applications for green cards.
