Project Title: Mental Health Wrap Around Education Support
Project Description:

Leadership. Education. Empower. Performance (L.E.E.P) To College Foundation (L2C) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2013 that levels the playing field for underrepresented youth by providing access to the same high-quality enrichment programs available to high-income families. According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, mental health problems impact student’s energy level, concentration, dependability, mental ability, and optimism which hinders performance. This research shows that untreated mental health issues like anxiety and depression can negatively impact students’ grade point average – hindering academic performance and drive to pursue higher education. At L.E.E.P, we take a holistic approach to academic success by incorporating wrap-around mental health services including our L.I.G.H.T. (Living in Good Health Together) Summit, Mentorship Program, and our 10 Minutes for Me sessions. Our annual LIGHT Summit began in 2019, bringing youth from across Prince George’s County and Greater Washington, DC to engage in a day of activities and workshops geared toward positive mental health. Our 10 Minutes for ME program occurs monthly for participants to interact and engage with educators, psychologists, social workers, and partners for 10 minutes virtually. Each session provides insight, themes, and topics to motivate, empower, and educate our youth including strengthening family & community partnerships and nurturing individual well-being. Another cornerstone of our student support is our mentorship program in partnership with Ally Financial. This initiative pairs each of our high school scholars with an employee mentor from Ally for the full academic year. Pairs meet twice weekly to form meaningful connections that provide guidance and inspiration through a character-building social-emotional learning curriculum. Mentors draw from lived experiences to help mentees navigate the challenges of adolescence and planning for the future. Additionally, Ally hosts financial literacy workshops to expose scholars to diverse industries and professions.
