Project Title: Healthy homes that heal hurting hearts
Project Description:

To whom it may concern:

Children in Crisis would like to provide the following information in a written request for consideration of funding.

Children in Crisis is a 501c3 non-profit (65-1196220) committed to “Providing Homes . . . Keeping Brothers and Sisters Together.” The Children’s Neighborhood provides an emergency shelter for young children. Our family foster homes help with the severe shortage of foster homes in our community. By providing a home to our target population (large sibling foster groups) we are enhancing the children’s lives by keeping the connection with their brothers and sisters. We are also providing these children with a safe and stable environment in which they will grow and thrive. Because of foundations like yours, we have given a safe and loving home to over 1050 children since 2008. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of children.

We support Circuit 1 of NorthWest Florida which includes Okaloosa, Escambia, Santa Rosa & Walton Counties. Each foster home is staffed 365 days a year with a married couple who provides a loving environment catering to each specific need of our sibling groups, and the children stay as long as they need a home. There are a total of five foster homes, as well as an "Opportunity Home," which has 8 studio apartments for ages (18-22) who age out of the foster care system, and will continue to learn independent living skills. CIC also provides "Wrap Around" services which focus on teaching our children basic independent living skills so self-sufficiency can be achieved. Many of our programs exist to serve within our multipurpose Kid’s Clubhouse. Our Kids Clubhouse is our safe, interactive, fun atmosphere for the kids. Homework help, lessons, special occasions, and therapy sessions are provided here. Children in Crisis provides complete care for the children we serve. Not only is each child given a safe, supportive, and loving home but are also provided with additional services.

Project Title: EmpowerYouth: Building Futures, Breaking Barriers
Project Description:

Our project, "EmpowerYouth: Building Futures, Breaking Barriers," is a comprehensive initiative by Our Future Children, Inc (OFC) aimed at uplifting at-risk youth in Hawaii. In response to the pressing challenges faced by these young individuals—stemming from parental hardships, inadequate education, and homelessness—our program integrates mentoring, education, and hands-on job training.

Mentors, trained in evidence-based techniques by the Arise Foundation, will guide participants through a life skills curriculum covering crucial topics such as anger management, domestic abuse prevention, and substance abuse awareness. This mentorship is complemented by the establishment of a job training facility, providing practical skills to meet the demands of the local job market.

A unique aspect of our initiative is the creation of a farm-to-table food truck park. This innovative setup not only imparts business and hospitality management skills but also addresses the shortage of trained workers in the post-COVID hospitality industry. The park will be maintained by students and young adults, fostering a sense of ownership and pride as they witness the fruits of their hard work.

Our target areas—Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Aiea, and Waianae—are communities with a demonstrated need for such support. Our ultimate goal is to see at least 50% of participating youth graduate with a marketable trade or skill and improve their academic performance by at least one letter grade.

This project aligns with OFC’s longstanding commitment to youth development, building on our successful track record of mentoring thousands of children in Texas from 2009 to 2018. The requested grant funding will be instrumental in realizing the transformative potential of "EmpowerYouth," fostering resilient, skilled, and empowered youth prepared for a brighter future.

Total Project Budget: $10,000

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Prospective support from local businesses and trade unions through collaborative partnerships. Anticipated income from the on-site farm-to-table food truck park.

Project Duration: 1 Year
Geographical Area Served: The geographical areas served by "EmpowerYouth: Building Futures, Breaking Barriers" include the communities of Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Aiea, and Waianae in Hawaii. These locations have been strategically chosen based on demonstrated needs for youth support and intervention. Our focus on these areas ensures a targeted and impactful approach to address the unique challenges faced by at-risk youth in these communities, fostering positive change and empowerment within a defined geographic scope.
Age Group To Be Served: The age group to be served by "EmpowerYouth: Building Futures, Breaking Barriers" encompasses youth and young adults aged 13 to 25. This range is carefully selected to address the critical transitional period where individuals face challenges related to education, life skills, and entry into the workforce. By tailoring our programs to this age group, we aim to provide targeted support that equips participants with the necessary skills and resilience for a successful transition into adulthood.

Project Title: Bags of Fun
Project Description:

Bags of Fun bring unique play to children in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska whose health and happiness is both compromised and threatened due to long term and life-threatening condition. Every Bag of Fun delivered results in a distraction from their medical condition, hope during a time of distress and happiness in a time of darkness.  Play based therapy has proven to be effective in improving pain, anxiety, and fatigue levels in hospitalized children.  Each Bag of Fun is valued at $475 and is customized to each child’s age, gender and diagnosis. Our Bags of Fun provide a way out of negative feelings and disappointments, create a continuity of everyday life, help children maintain their self-esteem, confidence, and sense of control. The medical professionals that we collaborate with have found that children who participate in playful, behavioral distraction are calmer and more receptive to treatment. Our specially crafted Bags of Fun for these patients help stabilize and provide them with a sense of relief during their immediate crisis. We will continue to work closely with hospitals to help them make a child’s darkest time a bit brighter. The power of play makes a real difference in recovery for the recipient and gives hope to their families. Since inception, we have delivered over 13,500 Bags of Fun. Just last year, we delivered joy, laughter, and relief to 1,700 families.

We are proud to work closely with the medical professionals at participating hospitals. We receive weekly requests from each hospital’s Child Life Specialist for children who qualify for a Bag of Fun, which is any patient being treated for a long term or life limiting disease, including mental illness. We pride ourselves on providing Bags of Fun to all seriously ill children in need of distraction from the constant stress of spending time in treatment at the hospital. The reach of our program is expansive and continues to grow each year.  We serve pediatric patients with cancer, organ transplants, kidney dialysis, bone marrow transplants, severe GI, severe epilepsy, severe trauma, palliative care, neurology, burn victims, Batten’s Disease, EB skin disease, cardiac ailments and mental health disorders.
