Project Title: Climate Clinics for Underserved Teens
Project Description:

climate Action Clinics & Sustainability Challenge 2025

Concept
For the academic year of 2025, the Student Global Ambassador Program (SGAP Leaders) and partner (The School of Engineering at Catholic University) will engage 500 ninth grade students from underserved schools (250 in-person from Maryland, and 250 virtually) to explore key issues related to climate solutions in their own communities and states. Over 6 weeks, high school students will be coached by trained facilitators (climate coaches) to prepare for the Sustainability Challenges – a competition to achieve net-zero carbon at USEC High School (fictitious high school).

Content
Over 6 weeks, high school student groups will examine the Energy supply and demand side equation of their own school as it relates to transportation, food waste and electrical energy.

In addition, students will hone presentation, research, collaboration and communication skills around climate change, renewable energy and climate injustice issues to prepare for the competition. Subject matter experts from climate fields will virtually share their expertise with student teams. Youth climate activists will virtually discuss their passion to impact climate change, and students will reinforce their learning by participating in multiplayer and single player trivia games.

Broader Audience of Students:
We will offer 4 identical Sustainability workshops targeting 9th & 10th graders from 10 schools in Maryland (Montgomery, Prince Georges, Baltimore, and Howard counties). Each school will provide 50 students. Two Sustainability Challenge workshops will be in- person and held at Catholic University School of Engineering in January 2025. Two workshops will be virtual and will be held in March 2025 for up to 125 students per workshop. Student participants will come from schools in New Jersey (Morris, Sommett, Bergen, Plainfield, Montclair counties, and the city of Newark). Pre-recorded and edited virtual coaching clinics will be shared via CANVAS to prepare those students for the March workshops.

If awarded $8000, we would refine our virtual climate clinics by providing hands-on kits, asynchronous and synchronous training in climate-related careers, clean energy, and how to calculate one’s carbon footprint.

Project Title: Club Fiya
Project Description:

STATEMENT OF NEED

There are at-risk youth aged 13-18 years in the Seminole County area who lack basic life skills. The statistics show that Seminole County is Florida’s 13th most populous county with 2.2% of Florida’s population. Within this community, there is an extremely high crime rate. The problem is progressively getting worse due to the increase in crime and juvenile delinquency rates. The goal of our program is to provide etiquette, leadership development, physical fitness, mental health awareness and financial literacy to these at-risk youth.

EXPECTATIONS

The program will be successful when the youth that we serve demonstrate a 10% increase in their life skills development, a clear understanding of financial management, reduction in obesity and increase in healthy eating choices. Additionally, the youth that are served will demonstrate coping skills which are obtained during mental health awareness sessions.

ACTIVITIES

Upon entering into our program, the youth will complete a needs assessment during orientation. Based on the results of the assessment, the youth will be enrolled in a 12-month, 6-month, or 3-month program which will include sessions related to life skills development, etiquette, financial literacy, mental health awareness, and physical fitness. Various events will be implemented throughout the course of the program including a Back to School Bash (where the youth will be provided with community resources), a Private Dinner at a local Upscale Restaurant, an End of School Luncheon & Award Celebration, Hands-on cooking opportunities and opportunities to participate in local sporting events. Upon completion of the program, the youth will participate in a Graduation Ceremony and will be provided with a Certificate of Completion.

RESOURCES

Overall, the resources needed for the program are a building/permanent location to host the various programs, transportation to and from the MPOWER Center, funding for Advertisement and Marketing.

Life Skills Development Sessions

In order to effectively host our life skill development sessions, we will need staff to educate the youth in relation to leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, psycho-social competence, interpersonal skills, making choices, innovation, effective communication, and all other skills which will be included in the sessions.

Etiquette Sessions

In order to effectively host our etiquette sessions, we will need staff to educate the youth in relation to various forms of etiquette. We will need the following equipment: tables, chairs, table settings, banquet supplies, and multimedia equipment.

Financial Literacy Sessions

In order to effectively host our financial literacy sessions, we will need staff to educate the youth in relation to financial skills, credit management skills, bank account management, and checks and balances. We will need the following equipment: multimedia equipment, workbook packets, calculators, funding for programing to provide basic budgeting skills.

Mental Health Awareness Sessions

In order to effectively host our mental health awareness sessions, we will need staff to educate the youth in relation to emotional development, coping mechanisms, interpersonal skills and effective communication. We will need multimedia equipment as well as other creative tools which can be used to assist with coping based on the results of the youth’s initial assessment.

Physical Fitness Sessions

In order to effectively host our physical fitness sessions, we will need staff to educate the youth in relation to health and wellness. This will include providing cooking courses, home economics courses, storage space for food items (food pantry), basic kitchen equipment and utensils. Additionally, the youth will participate in local community activities such as kickball tournaments, weekly exercise by playing various sports.

STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT

Portions of the Life Skills Develpoment and Physical Fitness have been implemented such as the Back to School Bash and we currently participate in annual local kickball tournaments and host King’s Court Basketball programs. We are in the beginning states of the etiquette, financial literacy, mental health awareness and physical fitness sessions.

CONTEXT

The current statistics in Seminole County reveal the areas of need, such as Casselberry, Altamonte Springs, and Sanford. These areas will immediately benefit from programs such as those listed above. Therefore, the program will be successful and beneficial to the community.

Project Title: Intergenerational Relationship-Building for Safe and Strong Schools
Project Description:

Teachers Unite (TU) seeks support for two interwoven projects aimed at fostering safe and supportive schools, expanding emotional and social support for students, offering leadership development for public school community members, and increasing intergenerational peacekeeping practices in public schools across the five boroughs:

Borough-Based Cohorts –
TU utilizes a “cohort” model of intergenerational organizing and relationship-building, bringing together school community members monthly through four borough-based cohorts: Brooklyn, Queens, Downtown Manhattan, and Uptown/Bronx. Cohorts are spaces for educators, students, parents, and allies to share skills for developing restorative justice as well as democratic, collaborative leadership in schools.

Restorative Justice Toolkit for Teachers, Students, and Families –
TU convened 32 educators, students, and parents to build a community participatory action research project gathering tactics, stories, strategies, lessons, and advice from school community members about how to shift schools to adopt restorative practices and reject punitive, exclusionary school cultures. In the beginning of 2024, we will launch a toolkit and begin a training series. TU will be conducting public workshops with educators, students, school staff, and community members on the resource, including opportunities to participate in learning exchanges through our existing borough-based cohort model.

Project Title: Americana Youth Program
Project Description:

The Youth Program is designed to support the success of children in school, through the development of both academic and behavioral skills, in spite of the many challenges our students face coming from international and/or low-income families. Youth are particularly vulnerable; educational success is dependent on consistent healthy meals, comprehension of English instruction, homework help and mentoring, and tools for navigating the emotional hardships of relocation, such as bullying, trauma, and a sense of not belonging. In addition to cultural barriers such as language, culture, and community, many refugees face extreme poverty and food insecurity. This directly affects the academic performance of our adolescent participants. When children are resettled in the United States they will initially begin school, on average, four grades behind their peers because of their previously interrupted education. According to research performed by HHS and the Society for Research in Child Development in 2017, poverty has more of an impact on executive function and academic performance than language and cultural barriers. Simultaneously, many of our refugee participants also experience first or second hand Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or depression because of their family’s earlier experiences. Americana’s Youth Program is designed to meet this pressing need for our participants through homework help, tutoring, mentorship, and educational enrichment.
