Project Title: Americana Youth Program
Project Description:

The Youth Program is designed to support the success of children in school, through the development of both academic and behavioral skills, in spite of the many challenges our students face coming from international and/or low-income families. Youth are particularly vulnerable; educational success is dependent on consistent healthy meals, comprehension of English instruction, homework help and mentoring, and tools for navigating the emotional hardships of relocation, such as bullying, trauma, and a sense of not belonging. In addition to cultural barriers such as language, culture, and community, many refugees face extreme poverty and food insecurity. This directly affects the academic performance of our adolescent participants. When children are resettled in the United States they will initially begin school, on average, four grades behind their peers because of their previously interrupted education. According to research performed by HHS and the Society for Research in Child Development in 2017, poverty has more of an impact on executive function and academic performance than language and cultural barriers. Simultaneously, many of our refugee participants also experience first or second hand Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or depression because of their family’s earlier experiences. Americana’s Youth Program is designed to meet this pressing need for our participants through homework help, tutoring, mentorship, and educational enrichment.
