Project Title: Intergenerational Relationship-Building for Safe and Strong Schools
Project Description:

Teachers Unite (TU) seeks support for two interwoven projects aimed at fostering safe and supportive schools, expanding emotional and social support for students, offering leadership development for public school community members, and increasing intergenerational peacekeeping practices in public schools across the five boroughs:

Borough-Based Cohorts –
TU utilizes a “cohort” model of intergenerational organizing and relationship-building, bringing together school community members monthly through four borough-based cohorts: Brooklyn, Queens, Downtown Manhattan, and Uptown/Bronx. Cohorts are spaces for educators, students, parents, and allies to share skills for developing restorative justice as well as democratic, collaborative leadership in schools.

Restorative Justice Toolkit for Teachers, Students, and Families –
TU convened 32 educators, students, and parents to build a community participatory action research project gathering tactics, stories, strategies, lessons, and advice from school community members about how to shift schools to adopt restorative practices and reject punitive, exclusionary school cultures. In the beginning of 2024, we will launch a toolkit and begin a training series. TU will be conducting public workshops with educators, students, school staff, and community members on the resource, including opportunities to participate in learning exchanges through our existing borough-based cohort model.
