Project Title: Children’s Hospital Patient Events
Project Description:

We are writing to extend an invitation to The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to support Friends of Children’s Hospital’s upcoming series of annual events. Friends of Children’s Hospital annually organizes 5-6 events at Children’s of Mississippi, Mississippi’s only children’s hospital, aiming to create memorable and enjoyable experiences for pediatric patients and their families. These events not only provide a welcome distraction from the challenges of medical treatment but also instill a sense of joy and hope in the hearts of these brave young patients.

Over the years, we have hosted a range of successful events, including vibrant Mardi Gras parades on the inpatient floors, heartwarming visits from Santa Claus and his merry elves, enabling the children to stuff their own stockings, and exciting Easter parties complete with visits from the Easter Bunny and baskets for each child to fill. These events have proven to be immensely uplifting for the children and their families, fostering a positive atmosphere within the hospital.

To continue our mission of creating the best possible experience for these children, we rely on the support and generosity of compassionate individuals and organizations like yours. By contributing to Friends, you will directly impact the lives of these young patients, offering them moments of happiness and respite during their medical treatment.

Getting a well-rounded education helps kids find their strengths and interests, prepares them for a life of learning, and gives them a foundation for a future career. Teachers enable students to succeed by introducing activities and projects according to their ages and abilities. Our project focuses on organizing workshops and training sessions to provide teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge. We ensure that the professional development opportunities are relevant, interactive, and aligned with the identified needs. Research indicates that professional learning ensures that teachers are equipped to meet the needs of their students. We conduct monthly professional development for every teacher in our program, and we support over 100 teachers annually. We partner with local school districts to prepare teachers to build relationships with students and families, collaborate with one another, and pour into the community. The teachers we support contribute to the lives of nearly 5,000 children in the community annually.

Project Title: REGAL Mentoring Program
Project Description:

Queen Academy, Inc. partners with alternative schools in Georgia school districts to support female students with significant behavior challenges through the implementation of our REGAL mentoring program for female middle and high school students. We provide direct social emotional and academic support to girls placed in alternative schools who have been expelled from traditional public schools through our mentoring program, which consists of weekly one-hour sessions in either a small-group or one-on-one format with an assigned mentor. We are requesting funding to host monthly educational field trips and social outings as
a part of our behavior incentive program for participants. Our behavior incentive program encourages participants to demonstrate our core values of respect, excellence, gumption, accountability, and love in school and in the community. We partner with school staff to track these core values through specific classroom and school-wide behaviors, and as participants demonstrate them each month, they are rewarded with an invitation to that month’s field trip. The timeline for this project will be the 2023-2024
school year, with field trips occurring monthly between
August 2023 and June 2024. We project to serve 20-25 participants across 3 school sites during the 2023-2024

Project Title: STEM Children’s Educational Program
Project Description:

Rebecca Everlene Trust Company offers an afterschool mobile STEM program for children ages under 7 to 18. We introduce young learners to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through project-based learning and a variety of creative learning applications aimed at developing each child’s cognitive, discerning, problem-solving, and peer collaboration skills. STEM integrates subjects into various education disciplines that include creative thinking and arts to prepare children for long-term success in STEM education and careers.

Our organization understands that student engagement and academic success is a daily choice made by the child. So, we use creative programming and a hands-on approach to learning that is engaging, exciting, and fun! Participating children get to design, build, test, and refine their own innovative creations in a safe and enriched learning environment.

In harmony with the U.S. Department of Higher Education’s directive to inform, engage, recruit, retain and graduate significantly more students and enhance their success in STEM pathway programs, Rebecca Everlene Trust Company was established to supplement education for preschool, Pre-K, and elementary school children in critical STEM disciplines while enhancing educational experiences that would lead to improved academic and long-term career outcomes. Studies have shown that students in STEM related after-school programs had increased interest in STEM careers and improvement in 21st-century skills (Noyce Foundation, 2014).

In addition, Rebecca Everlene Trust Company effectively shifts the sole burden of building STEM capabilities from public schools to our program, which is very helpful for budget-strapped schools. One of the many benefits of our program is our ability to increase student aptitude and engagement without strict and punitive approaches to learning. In doing so, we are also inspiring and empowering students to develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing, technologically rich, global society.
