Project Title: Kuumba Academy
Project Description:

In Kiswahili, "kuumba" means creativity. The Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s Kuumba Academy, founded in 2009, is a year-round after-school and summer leadership development program for children 6-16 years of age. We also hire young people 17-21 as paid program interns. Our curriculum includes training in African drumming, dance, cooking, entrepreneurship, and STEM and digital skills. Additionally, we instill principles of unity, self-determination, faith, and creativity as well as ways of eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. The Academy’s schedule consists of four annual sessions: Saturdays from 9 AM – 2 PM in the Winter/Spring; daily classes from 8 AM – 3 PM in the Summer; Saturday classes in the Fall; and in the last week of December. One of our pre-COVID surveys of Kuumba Academy students revealed that over 77% come from households earning less than $40K annually. Nearly all the students come from Orleans Parish.

For several years, we also operated the Ashé Institute for Cultural Education (InCuEd), which trained early childhood educators how to effectively teach young Black children using culturally appropriate pedagogical strategies. The pandemic forced us to cease the trainings, but we hope to be able to resume them again in the not-too-distant future. The Kuumba Academy has traditionally served as a laboratory for InCuEd teaching innovations.

Project Title: Character Does Matter: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Project Description:

Travis Manion Foundation’s signature military veteran-led youth mentorship program is Character Does Matter (CDM). Character Does Matter represents the culmination of TMF’s mission, leveraging the skills of our nation’s military community as role models, educating youth on character and leadership. The basis of all Travis Manion Foundation programming and the Character Does Matter curriculum is Positive Psychology, a field dedicated to studying factors that contribute to individual and community well-being and thriving. Individuals involved with CDM are empowered to improve their well-being by finding meaning and purpose in their lives, developing meaningful relationships, and fully engaging in activities. Through CDM, veterans inspire students, with a focus on fourth through twelfth grades, to live a life of service, leadership, and character.

Travis Manion Foundation is requesting a $10,000 commitment from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to continue our impactful partnership in 2024. Funds will support the continued program execution and growth of the Character Does Matter program in Florida. Specifically, this project will fund program supplies, ongoing curriculum development, enhanced CDM Veteran Mentor trainings, and experiential learning challenges within the CDM program. Additionally, this funding will be integral to supporting the advent of TMF Clubs for youth participants of the program as they streamline community service activation at their respective schools.

Today’s Date: 3/28/2023
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: College Readiness & Access for Underrepresented Youth
Project Description:

Reality Changers believes that college changes everything. Our mission is to prepare youth to become first-generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. Our vision is equitable and universal access to education.

In 2021, Reality Changers celebrated 20 years of impacting low-to-moderate income (LMI) youth across San Diego and especially in City Heights, where less than 14% of adults hold college diplomas.

Low income, first-generation students see and desire higher education as a way out of poverty and long term success. On average, a Bachelor’s degree increases lifetime earnings by 84%, according to The Georgetown University Center On Education and the Workforce. Our College Apps Academy program supports the most vulnerable individuals, LMI students, and gives them the training, education and support they need to get accepted and matriculate into college.

College Apps Academy guides 300 12th graders through the entire college application and acceptance process. The Academy provides weekly, small group and 1-on-1 instruction to students on college application and financial aid in addition to the resources and knowledge students need to pursue a post-secondary education. This program is seen as an expert in college admissions, financial aid, and providing tools for college success.

Students in College Apps Academy are also assigned a mentor and receive academic tutoring throughout their Reality Changers experience. The impact of the mentorship component lies in the partnership that emerges from two people unlikely to meet without such a program in place.

The goal is for 100% of students to graduate from high school and 97% to attend college. Programming takes place year-round, with the majority of the curriculum/events occurring between September – June. It is all provided at no-cost to the student and their family.

Today’s Date: March 28, 2023
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: Early Literacy Program for Two Schools in Oakland, California
Project Description:

The mission of Yours Humanly is to provide children in need access to quality education and equitable resources. In the U.S., we fulfill our mission almost entirely through volunteer support, implemented through seven signature programs. Our project request, which falls under our Literacy Program, is for support to provide Family Literacy Kits to two Title 1 elementary schools in Oakland, California.

Our Literacy Program addresses California’s devastating literacy crisis. Of the 706 students of Allendale and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary schools in Oakland, 83% are not reading at grade level. Among their families, over 85% are economically disadvantaged; 95% are minorities; and many are new immigrants. These factors often impede age-critical literacy growth. Studies find that by Grade 3, children with significant literacy deficits are four times more likely to drop out of high school than peers with adequate reading skills.

To combat Grade 3 literacy deficits, our project fosters family reading experiences for children in Grades K-2. Family Literacy Kits provide English-language and bilingual books, reading cubes, magnetic letters, and other tools that encourage parent engagement in their child’s reading. Studies show that parents’ literacy involvement can exceed the impact of classroom reading activity, making this project crucial to our work in Oakland.

With your support, K-2 families at these two schools will benefit from at-home reading activity. The cost of providing the kits is $17,650. We kindly request a grant of $10,000. The remaining $7,650 will be funded by Yours Humanly through donations and funds raised at our annual Gift Of Schooling fundraiser. Each semester, a quantitative teacher assessment will measure desired outcomes in reading interest, reading skills, and communication skills overall. The Hermanowski Family Foundation will receive a detailed final report.

We greatly appreciate the work you do, and we thank you for considering our request.

Total Project Budget: $17,650 total. $10,000 is kindly requested from the Hermanowski Family Foundation

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): $7,650 is provided by other Yours Humanly funds/donors. $5,000 was committed at our recent gala and $2,650 has been pledged by other donors.

Project Title: YPT In-School Playwriting Program
Project Description:

With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, YPT will provide our In-School Playwriting Program for approximately 350 elementary, middle, high school, and college-aged students at partner sites across the Washington, DC region.

YPT’s In-School Playwriting Program (ISP) weaves the art of playwriting into students’ school
day instruction to enhance literacy, creative expression, and communication. Serving youth
ages 8-18 over 12 Common Core-aligned workshops, ISP features a YPT teaching artist
guiding young people through learning the tools of playwriting and the mechanics of language,
drama, and self-expression. Through customized and flexible program delivery models, every ISP student writes their own play from idea to final draft and we bring local actors into the classroom to perform students’ plays, allowing them to see their words brought to life, an empowering experience that shows them what they have to say matters.

The majority of YPT’s ISP students will be served through our larger Young Playwrights’ Workshop initiative, a new professional development initiative for DCPS theater educators to train them in how to integrate playwriting into their classrooms. In FY24, YPT will expand this program to 10 classrooms while the YPT Programs Team continues to provide in-person In-School Playwriting Programs for students across 20 classrooms. In the spring, YPT will guide these teachers in developing and delivering their own playwriting programs for these students as they write and eventually perform their own original work at the DCPS Performing Arts Festival.

Support from the Hermanowski Foundation has been instrumental in developing and expanding the In-school Playwriting Program. Your continued support in this critical moment will ensure that we are able to sustain existing programming and expand the program to serve 10 projected Workshop classrooms next year, supporting teachers and students as they continue to navigate trauma and learning loss resulting from the pandemic.

Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: CHLDC Middle School Student Success Center
Project Description:

CHLDC requests a grant of $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our highly successful Middle School Student Success Center (MSSSC). Funds will be used for program expenses/staff salaries to support the MSSSC as it operates at IS 171 and Highland Park Community School, which are co-located in the same building. The MSSSC is a school-based program that provides counseling and support to help 250 low income eighth-graders apply to more competitive and selective high schools in NYC. These eighth-graders receive support from adult staff and Youth Leaders, who are students trained to support and educate their peers. Parents tell us that the Youth Leadership program has taught their children responsibility, leadership and work ethic. Youth Leaders are proud of their role in the program and the positive difference they have made in the school community.

As part of the high school application process, Youth Leaders help their peers apply to up to 12 different public high schools, many of which have different admissions criteria. The MSSSC helps students and their families navigate NYC’s complex high school choice process with targeted application support so that students can find a high-quality school that matches their interests, placing them on the path to school engagement, on-time high school graduation and college. For instance, last year, 88% of our students gained acceptance to high schools with graduation rates of at least 75%, an increase from 2020 with 80% of students gaining acceptance. In 2021, 91% of students were accepted into their top 3 choices and 40% of students got into a high demand school.

With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, the MSSSC will help students develop a clear vision for their educational future.
