Project Title: CHLDC Middle School Student Success Center
Project Description:

CHLDC requests a grant of $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our highly successful Middle School Student Success Center (MSSSC). Funds will be used for program expenses/staff salaries to support the MSSSC as it operates at IS 171 and Highland Park Community School, which are co-located in the same building. The MSSSC is a school-based program that provides counseling and support to help 250 low income eighth-graders apply to more competitive and selective high schools in NYC. These eighth-graders receive support from adult staff and Youth Leaders, who are students trained to support and educate their peers. Parents tell us that the Youth Leadership program has taught their children responsibility, leadership and work ethic. Youth Leaders are proud of their role in the program and the positive difference they have made in the school community.

As part of the high school application process, Youth Leaders help their peers apply to up to 12 different public high schools, many of which have different admissions criteria. The MSSSC helps students and their families navigate NYC’s complex high school choice process with targeted application support so that students can find a high-quality school that matches their interests, placing them on the path to school engagement, on-time high school graduation and college. For instance, last year, 88% of our students gained acceptance to high schools with graduation rates of at least 75%, an increase from 2020 with 80% of students gaining acceptance. In 2021, 91% of students were accepted into their top 3 choices and 40% of students got into a high demand school.

With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, the MSSSC will help students develop a clear vision for their educational future.
