Project Title: YPT In-School Playwriting Program
Project Description:
With support from the Hermanowski Foundation, YPT will provide our In-School Playwriting Program for approximately 350 elementary, middle, high school, and college-aged students at partner sites across the Washington, DC region.
YPT’s In-School Playwriting Program (ISP) weaves the art of playwriting into students’ school
day instruction to enhance literacy, creative expression, and communication. Serving youth
ages 8-18 over 12 Common Core-aligned workshops, ISP features a YPT teaching artist
guiding young people through learning the tools of playwriting and the mechanics of language,
drama, and self-expression. Through customized and flexible program delivery models, every ISP student writes their own play from idea to final draft and we bring local actors into the classroom to perform students’ plays, allowing them to see their words brought to life, an empowering experience that shows them what they have to say matters.
The majority of YPT’s ISP students will be served through our larger Young Playwrights’ Workshop initiative, a new professional development initiative for DCPS theater educators to train them in how to integrate playwriting into their classrooms. In FY24, YPT will expand this program to 10 classrooms while the YPT Programs Team continues to provide in-person In-School Playwriting Programs for students across 20 classrooms. In the spring, YPT will guide these teachers in developing and delivering their own playwriting programs for these students as they write and eventually perform their own original work at the DCPS Performing Arts Festival.
Support from the Hermanowski Foundation has been instrumental in developing and expanding the In-school Playwriting Program. Your continued support in this critical moment will ensure that we are able to sustain existing programming and expand the program to serve 10 projected Workshop classrooms next year, supporting teachers and students as they continue to navigate trauma and learning loss resulting from the pandemic.
