Project Title: New Laptops for Cristo Rey Atlanta’s Science and Technology Lab
Project Description:

Cristo Rey Atlanta graciously seeks $10,000 toward the purchase of 100 new Dell Laptops Model 5520 for its science and technology lab. Each laptop is approximately $1,500.

(CRA) is a Catholic learning community that educates young people with limited economic means, of any faith or creed, to become men and women for and with others. Through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a relevant work study experience, students graduate prepared for college and life. In alignment with the Hermanowski Family Foundation’s mission to improve and transform the lives of children and young adults, CRA aims to provide students with the necessary tools to succeed and to achieve their full potential. CRA has a student population of 484, serving over 1,000 high school students since inception in 2014.

CRA students are currently using older laptop models that are at end-of-life stages, operating on outdated technology that no longer supports the level of function they need to operate software programs (e.g., Adobe Photoshop or Certiport Compass, an exam delivery software). This project will impact each of the students CRA serves. CRA IT Director, Shundra Davis, Computer Science Instructor and Department Chair, Alean Cook, and Computer Science Instructor, Andrea Pendergraph, will purchase the laptops and install software.

At CRA, the median household income for all of our students is $35,000 for a family of four and 99% of all students are people of color. With 100% of CRA’s student body low-income, they have limited educational options. These students are all on scholarship. With CRA’s business model allowing students to receive a quality private Catholic education for minimal cost by working five days each month in an entry-level job, students are breaking generational socio-economic barriers.

Project Title: PHIT Kids NYC Campaign
Project Description:

PHIT America is a national nonprofit established in 2013 with the mission of tackling the Inactivity Pandemic and thereby improving the physical and mental health of the 50 million children in our elementary schools. Many of these schools have been forced to eliminate or drastically decrease Physical Education (PE) from their educational programs. Nationwide, PHIT America has placed our quality-tested, out-of-the-box PE Programs in over 1,300 schools that educate over 740,000 children. These programs have been built in partnership with leading experts and national athletic and sports associations. Our overall goal is to create healthier, smarter, and happier kids by enhancing every USA elementary schools’ PE curriculum with a program that teaches basic health and fitness skills and introduces kids to lifetime sports such as golf and tennis. We already have school partners in NYC seeking to expand their programs with us and $5,000 will allow us to add programs in 2 schools.

Our 2022-2024 objective is to place PE curriculum and equipment in 5% of New York City public
elementary schools (50 schools), especially Title I schools. Although New York City does have certain
requirements around Physical Education – specifically requiring 120 minutes per week with some
activity every day for K-3 – in many cases, due to a lack of resources and large class sizes, students
are left inactive during unstructured time. In the 2021-2022 school year, 72% of children in New
York City public schools were classified as economically disadvantaged. 41% Hispanic; 25% black;
17% Asian; 14.7% white.

Project Title: Talent Search and Upward Bound (TSUB)
Project Description:

Since 2011, the Talent Search and Upward Program (TSUB) has provided integrative educational enrichment and academic supportive services and has successfully graduated over 1,719 first-generation students. As one of the only education programs that have integrated academic counselors into school systems, TSUB focuses on 562 low-income students (9th through 12th grade) from Chula Vista Senior, San Ysidro, and Sweetwater high schools, all located within the Sweetwater Union High School District. The school demographic has more than 80% of its population being Hispanic/ESL students, and over 70% living below the federal poverty line with minimal parental support and resources. The data from the Department of Education reflects college enrollment in Sweetwater Union High School District is at 47.4% compared to the state average of 65.4%, and only 51.2% in Language Arts and 28.9% in Mathematics met the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) standard.

To begin improving equitable education opportunities, TSUB has increased student access academic counseling, college resources, and comprehensive core subject tutoring, while also providing fun and vibrant learning experiences through community-based enrichment activities. The four program components are:
1) Academic Advancement – provides students with tailored academic success plans/academic counseling alongside of daily core subject tutoring (including STEM subjects, humanities studies, and the arts) and bi-monthly boot camps for additional support.
2) Student Development/Enrichment Activities – organizes leadership and life skills workshops, guest speakers, and field trips (to museums, college tours, musicals, etc.) that foster student’s Social and Emotional Learning, creativity, and confidence inside and outside of the classroom setting.
3) College Preparation – host one-on-one college counseling, college application workshops, standardized testing preparation, and college preparatory courses.
4) Parent Academy – provide quarterly parent workshops and parent meetings to increase awareness of postsecondary education and improve parental support.

While the program has been tremendously successful in the last ten years, it is LSSSC’s strategic vision to increase program support and diversify program funding. With the requested funding of $10,000 from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation, LSSSC aims to further expand our program effort to advance equitable education as we prepare for the 2023 – 24 academic year.

Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter for Abused & Neglected Children
Project Description:

Grandma’s Place operates an emergency foster shelter program for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, operating 24 hours/7 days a week, 365 days per year in a loving and nurturing homelike environment. The program provides much needed care with on-site therapies provided by independent contractors in the following disciplines: speech, physical, occupational, psychological counseling and other therapies as needed. The shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night and is licensed for children age birth -12. It is the ONLY emergency residential shelter in Palm Beach County for both boys and girls ages birth through 12, which is vital as most abuse victims are younger than 6.
Children remain at the shelter for periods from one day to over a year, until it is safe for them to live with relatives, or a loving adoptive or foster home is found for them. We provide each child with a Case Plan that addresses their physical, emotional, social, and educational needs for the duration of their stay. A quarterly meal plan is developed by a registered dietician staff to ensure proper nutrition. School-aged children attend local public schools, and our staff coordinates with the school to assure that each child’s educational needs are being met.
Art lessons and music therapy sessions are held weekly as a comprehensive and effective tool to reduce feelings of loss, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and helplessness that are often associated with abuse and homelessness; and promote self-expression, interpersonal communication, and scholastic excellence. Children have tremendous resiliency; many children who have suffered abuse or abandonment become successful, healthy adults with relatively few problems, if they are removed from the negative environment. The more protective factors and resources that are available, the more likely these children will overcome adversities and obtain positive outcomes.

Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments and doctor visits. Their parents struggle to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties and procedures. Low-income and non-English speaking families face greater obstacles to achieving positive outcomes due to Socioeconomic and language barriers.
Although cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years, it comes with a steep price. Even families fortunate to have some form of health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, inflated prescriptions costs, and innumerable out-of-pocket and un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis and on the verge of homelessness. A study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR their child remains in treatment.
The 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida live in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children. Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child throughout treatment and beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team and through outreach to local, state, and national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education and support is critical and has been shown to increase quality of life AND overall chance of recovery and survival. In 2022 we served 1,012 clients, 68% being children.
