Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments and doctor visits. Their parents struggle to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties and procedures. Low-income and non-English speaking families face greater obstacles to achieving positive outcomes due to Socioeconomic and language barriers.
Although cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years, it comes with a steep price. Even families fortunate to have some form of health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, inflated prescriptions costs, and innumerable out-of-pocket and un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis and on the verge of homelessness. A study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR their child remains in treatment.
The 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida live in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children. Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child throughout treatment and beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team and through outreach to local, state, and national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education and support is critical and has been shown to increase quality of life AND overall chance of recovery and survival. In 2022 we served 1,012 clients, 68% being children.
