Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter for Abused & Neglected Children
Project Description:

Grandma’s Place operates an emergency foster shelter program for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, operating 24 hours/7 days a week, 365 days per year in a loving and nurturing homelike environment. The program provides much needed care with on-site therapies provided by independent contractors in the following disciplines: speech, physical, occupational, psychological counseling and other therapies as needed. The shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night and is licensed for children age birth -12. It is the ONLY emergency residential shelter in Palm Beach County for both boys and girls ages birth through 12, which is vital as most abuse victims are younger than 6.
Children remain at the shelter for periods from one day to over a year, until it is safe for them to live with relatives, or a loving adoptive or foster home is found for them. We provide each child with a Case Plan that addresses their physical, emotional, social, and educational needs for the duration of their stay. A quarterly meal plan is developed by a registered dietician staff to ensure proper nutrition. School-aged children attend local public schools, and our staff coordinates with the school to assure that each child’s educational needs are being met.
Art lessons and music therapy sessions are held weekly as a comprehensive and effective tool to reduce feelings of loss, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and helplessness that are often associated with abuse and homelessness; and promote self-expression, interpersonal communication, and scholastic excellence. Children have tremendous resiliency; many children who have suffered abuse or abandonment become successful, healthy adults with relatively few problems, if they are removed from the negative environment. The more protective factors and resources that are available, the more likely these children will overcome adversities and obtain positive outcomes.
