Project Title: ACS Foster Music Outreach Program
Project Description:

A Child’s Song, Inc. (ACS) collaborates with Shiloh House, residential education and treatment centers for foster youth, to bring music education for one-hour weekly to four Shiloh locations. The program goal is to foster hope and joy for the youth. Over 250 foster youth are served each year.

Programming with Shiloh House began in the Summer of 2020 with one location, in response to requests from Shiloh staff dealing with increased depression and isolation from foster youth due to COVID-19, and expanded to five locations in 2021. ACS’s Assistant Director and former foster youth herself, Kristin Orlando, leads this program, the only arts program provided at Shiloh. Youth are introduced to a rotating selection of instruments throughout the year, including drumming, keyboards, guitars and ukuleles. In addition to learning how to play their individual instruments, youth also learn the importance of creating a safe space, how to leave conflicts outside of the session, and how to work together to create music.

Though demographics do change based on the youth residing at the facilities, the current demographics are: American Indian/Alaskan Native: 1%; African-American: 23%; white: 56%; Other: 20%. 100% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Shiloh House supports some of the highest-needs youth in Colorado as every youth Shiloh serves has been removed from their biological family.

Foster youth experience trauma at unprecedented rates. Without intervention, these challenges can negatively impact their future life resulting in homelessness, unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, young pregnancies, future addictions, etc. Research shows that music helps mitigate the negative effects of trauma and improve mental health, positively impact brain development, and provide a healthy respite from stress. However, most foster youth can’t access music education. ACS believes that ALL children, regardless of their ability to pay, should have the opportunity for music exploration.

Total Project Budget: $80,000. The largest expense for this program is our music instructor salaries, followed by the transportation costs to each site. ACS will utilize any funds awarded to support this important program for foster youth in Colorado.

Today’s Date: 3/14/23
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: La Escuelita Weekday School Tuiton Assistance Fund
Project Description:

La Escuelita Weekday School (LEWS) is a half-day, dual-language preschool for 105 children, ages 1-5, in the South Boulevard corridor of Charlotte, NC. One third of LEWS students are living at or below the poverty line.

Our skilled, loving teachers utilize The Creative Curriculum for instruction using a dual-language approach. Two teachers in each classroom work as a team with one native English speaker and one native Spanish speaker. By providing a dual-language, play-based classroom experience, LEWS endeavors to instill an abiding sense of respect for all children, their unique cultures, and their individual development. By providing this nurturing, age-appropriate environment, we help lay a foundation of academic and social success that our children can continue to build upon in kindergarten and throughout their lives. Our holistic approach also includes offering parental education opportunities and support.

The correlation between a quality preschool experience and long-term academic and social success for students is well-studied and understood. However, an opportunity gap persists. According to the National Institute For Early Childhood Research, nearly half of all 3-year-olds and a third of all 4-year-olds in the U.S. were not enrolled in preschool in 2019. In large part, a single factor emerged as the reason: the cost of tuition.

In order to mitigate the factor of cost and create more opportunity for children to thrive and reach their greatest potential, LEWS offers a Tuition Assistance Program specifically for economically-disadvantaged Latino students to attend our preschool. The cost of our Tuition Assistance Program during the 2022-2023 school year is $106,200, which comprises 22% of LEWS’s current annual expenses. During this school year, 33% of LEWS students are receiving full or partial tuition assistance (34 students total). The average cost of tuition assistance for one student to attend LEWS for the entire school year is $3,141.

Total Project Budget: $106,200

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): 75% committed from tuition revenue from our full-paying families used to subsidize the cost of attendance for our families who receive assistance, 10% potential from other foundations and corporate partners

Project Title: Piggie Bear Toolkit for Foster Youth
Project Description:

Children growing up in underserved and foster care communities in Orange County face challenges like homelessness, neglect and abuse. There are currently more than 3,000 children in the foster care system throughout Orange County. According to an NIH study, most children in foster care, if not all, experience feelings of fear, loss, sadness, anxiety, and stress. These traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on a child’s ability to form relationships, problem-solve, and control impulses. In order to decrease the negative effects on their development and mental health, these feelings need to be addressed and treated early.

Since its inception, the Extraordinary Lives Foundation (ELF) has worked to ensure that Orange County’s most under-served children have access to therapeutic and educational tools to address their mental and emotional well-being. The target population is foster children ages 2 to 10 who are currently in the foster care system, including CASA, For the Children, Olive Crest, Orangewood, and the Orange County Social Services Agency.

Our approach to early childhood intervention is grounded in social-emotional development. The Piggie BEAR (Building Emotional Awareness and Resilience) Program works with foster care agencies, Title 1 & Head Start schools, and pediatric hospitals to guide teachers, healthcare providers, therapists, and parents to improve children’s emotional and mental well-being and strengthen their reading literacy.

The Piggie BEAR tool kit includes “The Power of Piggie Bear” bilingual book, Piggie Bear plush & coloring book, and Piggie Bear power cards. Piggie Bear empowers children and teaches them how to identify and manage their emotions. Piggie Bear teaches children about self-love and lets them know that they are amazing just the way they are!

Program outcomes include:

1) Increase in the children’s ability to take deep belly breaths to help calm their emotions for a majority of foster youth after completing the program;

2) A large percentage of caregivers will confirm that the social-emotional calming techniques have helped their foster youth and helped to build their self-esteem;

3) A noticeable decrease in anxiety and sadness expressed in foster youth.
