Project Title: La Escuelita Weekday School Tuiton Assistance Fund
Project Description:

La Escuelita Weekday School (LEWS) is a half-day, dual-language preschool for 105 children, ages 1-5, in the South Boulevard corridor of Charlotte, NC. One third of LEWS students are living at or below the poverty line.

Our skilled, loving teachers utilize The Creative Curriculum for instruction using a dual-language approach. Two teachers in each classroom work as a team with one native English speaker and one native Spanish speaker. By providing a dual-language, play-based classroom experience, LEWS endeavors to instill an abiding sense of respect for all children, their unique cultures, and their individual development. By providing this nurturing, age-appropriate environment, we help lay a foundation of academic and social success that our children can continue to build upon in kindergarten and throughout their lives. Our holistic approach also includes offering parental education opportunities and support.

The correlation between a quality preschool experience and long-term academic and social success for students is well-studied and understood. However, an opportunity gap persists. According to the National Institute For Early Childhood Research, nearly half of all 3-year-olds and a third of all 4-year-olds in the U.S. were not enrolled in preschool in 2019. In large part, a single factor emerged as the reason: the cost of tuition.

In order to mitigate the factor of cost and create more opportunity for children to thrive and reach their greatest potential, LEWS offers a Tuition Assistance Program specifically for economically-disadvantaged Latino students to attend our preschool. The cost of our Tuition Assistance Program during the 2022-2023 school year is $106,200, which comprises 22% of LEWS’s current annual expenses. During this school year, 33% of LEWS students are receiving full or partial tuition assistance (34 students total). The average cost of tuition assistance for one student to attend LEWS for the entire school year is $3,141.

Total Project Budget: $106,200

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): 75% committed from tuition revenue from our full-paying families used to subsidize the cost of attendance for our families who receive assistance, 10% potential from other foundations and corporate partners
