Project Title: YES! (Your Economic Success!)
Project Description:

YES! (Your Economic Success!) is a unique program for each middle school grade level which consists of activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for the importance that economic, financial and career decisions will play in their lives as adults.

As students transition into young adulthood, it is critical for them to be aware of the opportunities available to them, and to understand how the choices they make and the education they receive are connected to their future success. The JA YES! program is a ½ day of engagement, interaction and connection with volunteer mentors that help students explore how classroom learning relates to real-world careers, issues, and experiences. The program content is unique to each grade level, but the format of student groups rotating through a series of program sessions led by volunteers is consistent across grade levels. Each level of the JA YES! program includes work-readiness and life skills, as well as the value of education and training as concepts that are interwoven throughout the sessions. Students participate in activities highlighting different in-demand career clusters, including the trades, manufacturing, and engineering.

There is a phenomenon in education known as the “Middle School Slump,” a time when peer pressure and the transition out of elementary school prompt many students who were formerly good performers academically to begin losing interest in school. According to a study from the consulting firm the Bridgespan Group, this is also a time when JA’s programs are particularly effective at engaging students, helping to illustrate to them the benefits of staying in school and the relevance to their futures. The Bridgespan study noted that the involvement of volunteers from the community in the classroom as part of the JA experience was particularly beneficial to students. We would appreciate the partnership of The Hermanowski Foundation.

Project Title: Abba Family Prayer Weekends
Project Description:

We have established curriculum that is used all over the world to train church leaders in prayer and we have now adapted that curriculum for families targeting school-age children and their parents. We want to see every family in every church to be a "house of prayer" where children can experience God’s presence. We need funding for travel of the different trainers, for printing of the curriculum and supplies for the activities used during the weekend. We expect to have at least 8 weekend trainings this year and the cost is $3,000/weekend and will train up to 50 children and their parents. We are asking for help in providing funding for 3 of these weekends for low-income churches that cannot afford to help with the costs associated.

Project Title: Saturday Arts Dorill
Project Description:

Saturday Arts Dorill is a city wide academic year-long experiential multidisciplinary arts education program serving youth aged 10 through 18. We provide 33 weeks of programming, one day a week, from 9:00am to 4:30pm, at no cost to the families we serve. Dorill’s artists participate in seven art classes and workshops (Composition, Dance, Drama, Media, Music, Spoken Word, and Visual Arts) that are all 1-hour long. Our young citizen artists learn art technique, art history, and the socio-political impact of the arts. Using these professional skills, our youth, in collaboration with our artistic coaches, present artistic compositions during a Winter Workshop Showing in December and a Spring Final Show in June. These compositions not only shed light on social justice topics that resonate with them, but initiate thought-provoking conversations with their friends, family, and members of our surrounding communities to create actionable change.

In addition to art instruction, our youth engage in social emotional growth activities including group discussions, affirmations, writing prompts, and reflections in the mornings for 30 minutes and meditation in the afternoon for 15 minutes. The implementation of morning and afternoon meditation along with our seven core art classes boosts our young citizen artist’s self-awareness and their ability to nurture their emotional well-being.

Through Dorill’s unique Saturday Arts programming, we transform communities through artistic expression, academic + self-esteem coaching, civic engagement and community engagement workshops. The youth we serve receive the opportunity to reveal their potential as whole human beings who often live in a world silenced and built for the wealthy and well-connected. Our interdisciplinary arts education is created and reviewed by New York State certified teachers and focuses on developing and strengthening our young citizen artists’ sense of autonomy and free expression by utilizing DoER Maker Spaces (learner-driven, culturally responsive-sustaining spaces with interdisciplinary experiences).

Project Title: ArtsRAGEOUS Youth Art and STEAM Program
Project Description:

The overarching goal for Willcox Theater and Arts’ (WTA) year-round ArtsRAGEOUS Youth Art and STEAM Program is to "open doors." ArtsRAGEOUS focuses on creative outlets for youth from Willcox and the surrounding rural communities to explore, learn, achieve, and receive recognition for their accomplishments. ArtsRAGEOUS provides opportunities for all youth, especially those who are often overlooked or spend too many hours alone on video games or consumed by social media.

Willcox area youth have few opportunities to exercise creativity, excel through the arts, or engage in project-oriented STEAM learning. Arts learning is virtually non-existent in the local K-12 schools that serve Willcox and the smaller communities. These arts workshops for youth are crucial to the development of the whole child; one teen boy wrote, "You can take a picture of a bird or a landscape, but you can’t take a picture of a dragon. With art, you don’t just retell others’ stories, you tell your own." ArtsRAGEOUS not only encourages youth to explore their creativity and interests through a variety of arts, crafts, and STEAM programming but actively promotes life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, mentorship, problem-solving, and self-confidence in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Artistic and STEAM-oriented opportunities to participate, explore, learn, and accomplish are accessible to youth through WTA’s programming during the school year and during WTA’s eight-week Summer Youth Program. Summer program offerings include visual arts, digital art, photography, clay, coding, 3D design and print, podcasting recording and streaming, and general crafts. School year offerings focus on visual and digital arts, 3D design, and print and coding. Building ArtsRAGEOUS for 2024 brings more opportunities for more youth to tell their stories, explore creativity through various art media, experience creative STEAM problem-solving and project work, and test the limits of their possibilities.

Project Title: Free Family Art Labs
Project Description:

The goal of this project is to increase equitable access to the arts through hands-on experiences at no cost to the community. With the additional Family Art Labs, we expect to impact more than 8,000 families in Lee County.

Our intended audience is children and families living in traditionally underserved areas in Lee County. The selected locations of Pine Manor Community Center and Family Initiative will significantly improve our reach to communities that currently have limited access to the arts.

We have a solid model for the Family Art Lab application as the Alliance for the Arts already hosts a free monthly art experience for families. We would be focusing funds on expanding those efforts into areas that have a need for more arts access.

As part of our mission, we use the arts to help solve challenges through the arts in our community by expanding access and equity in the arts to underserved communities. The Alliance seeks support of $10,000 to fund 36 family friendly Art Labs at 3 locations across Lee County. That equates to a little over $8.00 for a family of four to experience the arts. We expect to serve 2,160 families this year (8640 individuals) tripling our current number of families served at our location.

The program will have a welcoming “come for a little or a long time” vibe. Families will be able to drop in during a 4 hour period, on a set day every month and experience a hands-on project, with light and fun educational components. Funding for this project will be broken up by month and expenditures will include arts supplies, teaching artist stipends, and marketing. Art makes a direct impact on communities and we are focusing on three primary areas: youth development and education, health and wellness, and neighborhood vitality. Please consider our request to make Fort Myers a more vibrant, healthy and connected community.

Project Title: Youth Life Skills & Sustainability Education
Project Description:

The life skills and sustainability youth project provides holistic education through project-based, handson learning. We focus on developing the whole child with a significant emphasis on cultivating character, creativity and critical thinking. We achieve this by having students do hands on learning activities such as working with animals, harvesting produce in their raised beds, cooking meals in the kitchen, and starting businesses.
Participants will gain the skills, knowledge, access to resources, appreciation, and motivation to improve their education to improve school performance and engagement. They will take ownership and responsibility for their own garden plot and learn empathy, compassion, and responsibility by taking care of animals. Additionally, they will apply math skills and literacy skills through selling eggs and produce at the local farmer’s market and starting their own businesses. As such, they will move beyond being consumers of education and learn how to be producers who provide nutritious and organic produce to their local community. Students will also participate in workshops to educate the community about health and wellness and how healthy ingredients can positively impact one’s life.
This program is important since we are surrounded by an area deemed as a Food Desert (USDA) that experiences high levels of Food Insecurity and a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life (USDA). Food Insecurity increases physical and mental health risks, especially with children in Food Insecure homes. This grant will enable us to address food insecurity by empowering youth to grow their own produce and share healthy and organic produce with their families. As we introduce the idea of being caretakers through gardening, we emphasize the development of life-skills and personal values to inspire growth and transformation.

Project Title: Economic Empowerment Programs for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:

Junior Achievement (JA) is dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a global economy. At Junior Achievement of Greater Fairfield County (JAGFC), we envision a world where young people have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. Our goal is to ensure that every young person in greater Fairfield County, Connecticut is sufficiently prepared to pursue their career of choice and manage their personal finances. JA’s programs focus on three pathways: financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Our program model is unique in that we utilize community and business partners, who are invested in the success of our local communities, to serve as volunteer role models. They offer resources and real-world experiences to young people and empower them to build a better future for themselves and their communities.

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would support the implementation of our Economic Empowerment Programs for 100 at-risk youth in 2024. Students in grades K-12 will learn about vital concepts, such as managing money, preparing for college and a career, and making responsible decisions. Program sessions will engage students in an age-appropriate exploration of personal finance and career exploration, which will help them develop knowledge and skills that are vital for a successful transition from the classroom to the working world. This project will serve young people from communities with a high percentage of low-to-moderate income households as well as racial and ethnic diversity. In greater Fairfield County, Connecticut, where the rate of income inequality is among the highest in the US, the opportunity gap exists overwhelmingly in these communities, and we focus our program efforts there to help young people break the poverty cycle and achieve lasting, positive change.
