Project Title: Youth Life Skills & Sustainability Education
Project Description:

The life skills and sustainability youth project provides holistic education through project-based, handson learning. We focus on developing the whole child with a significant emphasis on cultivating character, creativity and critical thinking. We achieve this by having students do hands on learning activities such as working with animals, harvesting produce in their raised beds, cooking meals in the kitchen, and starting businesses.
Participants will gain the skills, knowledge, access to resources, appreciation, and motivation to improve their education to improve school performance and engagement. They will take ownership and responsibility for their own garden plot and learn empathy, compassion, and responsibility by taking care of animals. Additionally, they will apply math skills and literacy skills through selling eggs and produce at the local farmer’s market and starting their own businesses. As such, they will move beyond being consumers of education and learn how to be producers who provide nutritious and organic produce to their local community. Students will also participate in workshops to educate the community about health and wellness and how healthy ingredients can positively impact one’s life.
This program is important since we are surrounded by an area deemed as a Food Desert (USDA) that experiences high levels of Food Insecurity and a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life (USDA). Food Insecurity increases physical and mental health risks, especially with children in Food Insecure homes. This grant will enable us to address food insecurity by empowering youth to grow their own produce and share healthy and organic produce with their families. As we introduce the idea of being caretakers through gardening, we emphasize the development of life-skills and personal values to inspire growth and transformation.
