Project Title: Economic Empowerment Programs for At-Risk Youth
Project Description:
Junior Achievement (JA) is dedicated to inspiring and preparing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a global economy. At Junior Achievement of Greater Fairfield County (JAGFC), we envision a world where young people have the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. Our goal is to ensure that every young person in greater Fairfield County, Connecticut is sufficiently prepared to pursue their career of choice and manage their personal finances. JA’s programs focus on three pathways: financial literacy, work and career readiness, and entrepreneurship. Our program model is unique in that we utilize community and business partners, who are invested in the success of our local communities, to serve as volunteer role models. They offer resources and real-world experiences to young people and empower them to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would support the implementation of our Economic Empowerment Programs for 100 at-risk youth in 2024. Students in grades K-12 will learn about vital concepts, such as managing money, preparing for college and a career, and making responsible decisions. Program sessions will engage students in an age-appropriate exploration of personal finance and career exploration, which will help them develop knowledge and skills that are vital for a successful transition from the classroom to the working world. This project will serve young people from communities with a high percentage of low-to-moderate income households as well as racial and ethnic diversity. In greater Fairfield County, Connecticut, where the rate of income inequality is among the highest in the US, the opportunity gap exists overwhelmingly in these communities, and we focus our program efforts there to help young people break the poverty cycle and achieve lasting, positive change.
