Project Title: Saturday Arts Dorill
Project Description:
Saturday Arts Dorill is a city wide academic year-long experiential multidisciplinary arts education program serving youth aged 10 through 18. We provide 33 weeks of programming, one day a week, from 9:00am to 4:30pm, at no cost to the families we serve. Dorill’s artists participate in seven art classes and workshops (Composition, Dance, Drama, Media, Music, Spoken Word, and Visual Arts) that are all 1-hour long. Our young citizen artists learn art technique, art history, and the socio-political impact of the arts. Using these professional skills, our youth, in collaboration with our artistic coaches, present artistic compositions during a Winter Workshop Showing in December and a Spring Final Show in June. These compositions not only shed light on social justice topics that resonate with them, but initiate thought-provoking conversations with their friends, family, and members of our surrounding communities to create actionable change.
In addition to art instruction, our youth engage in social emotional growth activities including group discussions, affirmations, writing prompts, and reflections in the mornings for 30 minutes and meditation in the afternoon for 15 minutes. The implementation of morning and afternoon meditation along with our seven core art classes boosts our young citizen artist’s self-awareness and their ability to nurture their emotional well-being.
Through Dorill’s unique Saturday Arts programming, we transform communities through artistic expression, academic + self-esteem coaching, civic engagement and community engagement workshops. The youth we serve receive the opportunity to reveal their potential as whole human beings who often live in a world silenced and built for the wealthy and well-connected. Our interdisciplinary arts education is created and reviewed by New York State certified teachers and focuses on developing and strengthening our young citizen artists’ sense of autonomy and free expression by utilizing DoER Maker Spaces (learner-driven, culturally responsive-sustaining spaces with interdisciplinary experiences).
