Project Title: Read2Succeed
Project Description:

The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools (FOCPS) has developed the Read2Succeed program to address the pre-reading and literacy skill deficits of disadvantaged kindergarten, first-, and second-grade students attending Orange County Public Schools (OCPS). Students without home libraries and limited reading experiences often enter school behind their more affluent peers, leading to discouragement and academic difficulties. The program aims to develop these essential pre-reading and literacy skills so that students can read on or above grade level by third grade. Read2Succeed collaborates with various community partners to secure and train volunteers who provide research-based supplemental help to students performing below grade level. Over 120 schools have signed up for Read2Succeed services this school year, indicating the urgent need for this program. Children’s access to quality child care, family education expectations, socio-economic levels, and racial/ethnic disparities impact their readiness to read. The majority of schools served through the program are Title I schools, serving large populations of disadvantaged students. The tutoring services offered by Read2Succeed help prepare young developing readers to achieve grade-level proficiency when tested in third grade on the state assessment. This program aims to give students the confidence and reading skills necessary to succeed in school, while planting the seeds for a lifetime love of reading and school success.

Project Title: Emergency Foster Shelter for Abused & Neglected Children
Project Description:

Grandma’s Place operates an emergency foster shelter program for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, operating 24 hours/7 days a week, 365 days per year in a loving and nurturing homelike environment. The program provides much needed care with on-site therapies provided by independent contractors in the following disciplines: speech, physical, occupational, psychological counseling and other therapies as needed. The shelter has a capacity of 16 children per night and is licensed for children age birth -12. It is the ONLY emergency residential shelter in Palm Beach County for both boys and girls ages birth through 12, which is vital as most abuse victims are younger than 6.

Children remain at the shelter for periods from one day to over a year, until it is safe for them to live with relatives, or a loving adoptive or foster home is found for them. We provide each child with a Case Plan that addresses their physical, emotional, social, and educational needs for the duration of their stay. A quarterly meal plan is developed by a registered dietician staff to ensure proper nutrition. School-aged children attend local public schools, and our staff coordinates with the school to assure that each child’s educational needs are being met.

Art lessons and music therapy sessions are held weekly as a comprehensive and effective tool to reduce feelings of loss, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and helplessness that are often associated with abuse and homelessness; and promote self-expression, interpersonal communication, and scholastic excellence. Children have tremendous resiliency; many children who have suffered abuse or abandonment become successful, healthy adults with relatively few problems, if they are removed from the negative environment. The more protective factors and resources that are available, the more likely these children will overcome adversities and obtain positive outcomes.

Project Title: Parking Lot and Gravel Road Build for BoysGrow Farm
Project Description:

BoysGrow is a year-round agricultural youth development program that includes farm tours and community events hosted by the participating youth. BoysGrow’s current parking lot framework is an open field. BoysGrow needs to build a parking lot and transform a dirt road into a gravel driveway to improve the property. The year-round programming, events, and tours require a safe and accessible parking lot and route to the rest of the farm for staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Hosting events in winter or during potential rainfall is currently problematic due to the parking situation. The dirt road leading to the southern part of the farm becomes impassable in the rainy spring months and does not present a strong presence of the organization. Ground improvements are essential to provide a more accessible and appealing experience on the farm for tours, community events, and hosting partnering organizations.

Community events and tours provide essential opportunities for BoysGrow to connect with the general public, partnering organizations, and potential funders. Further, the events hosted through the farm kitchen with our participating youth are vital to the BoysGrow program. BoysGrow youth work at some of these events and are thus able to showcase their hard work on the farm. These events, coupled with the events hosted by private parties renting the Farm Kitchen space, are crucial fundraising opportunities for the program.

With the installation of a parking lot and gravel road, BoysGrow can increase its profile as a site for agro-tourism. Agro-tourism allows people to connect with the land and the inner workings of food production. Touring the BoysGrow farm will enable people to see the success and benefits of its youth programming.

Project Title: Olympians in Life Program
Project Description:

PWF has provided fencing training and academic enrichment programming for underserved youth in the greater New York City area for 30 years. The Olympians in Life program promotes an active lifestyle and develops critical life skills through fencing and academic support, and offers structured, high-quality programming at little to no cost for students, most of whom come from low-income families and are Black and/or Latino/a and nearly half are girls.

Our program empowers students to excel both in the classroom and on the fencing strip. Coach-mentors not only teach fencing techniques and strategies, but also serve as positive role models. After fencing, students receive academic support from a qualified team of educators and professionals. Our students receive subject tutoring and standardized test preparation to strengthen their skills and set them up for academic success. In-person and online tutoring is available at least twice a week for students.

The program boasts a 100% graduation rate, with over 95% of students attending college or university and over 80% improving their GPA each year. PWF is the only community-based fencing program in the nation that consistently prepares youth to compete in the sport’s highest echelons while also providing high-quality academic enrichment.

Our Founder, Peter Westbrook, emphasizes that this program is "more than just about creating Olympians in fencing, we create Olympians in life."

Over the past few years, the pandemic made it challenging to raise funds for PWF and greatly limited program participation due to health and safety concerns. This year, we are excited to significantly increase participation and operate at full capacity. As such, PWF opened enrollment to more scholar-athletes and managed this growth by hiring additional coach-mentors and tutors to handle the increased scholar-athletes. A grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would significantly support our program’s expansion and operations for 2023-2024.

Project Title: Camp Forget Me Not
Project Description:

Camp Forget-Me-Not is a free, therapeutic grief camp for children 7-17. Most campers reside in DC’s lowest-income neighborhoods. Wendt hosts three one-week versions of the camp, divided by age group. Participants are co-survivors of homicide, or other death tradegies. Camp incorporates play, movement, art, drama, and cooking. Groups are facilitated by therapists. Campers to adult ratio is 1:1—with trained volunteers and therpists. Activities are designed to address stages of grief and supplement the loss that campers feel with coping skills, good memories, and practices to process emotions.

To enhance and extend camp experience, Wendt hosts virtual workshops for families across the Fall and Winter. Workshops incorporate the same elements as camp to unite families in shared healing space. Workshops strengthen parenting skills, enhance the home as a protective and healing place. A video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ap3nh8UnkvQ

40+ negative health outcomes and five of 10 leading causes of death are rooted in childhood trauma. In 2022 DC had 203 homicides, 19 of which were children—more than double the amount of previous two years. This proposal is written on 2/27/2023, in the two months of 2023 there have been 35 homicides—a 40% year over year increase. There has been a 125% increase in rapes. Crimes are concentrated in Wards7-8, intensifying trauma and grief there.

YOUTH: 1 in 11 DC youth experience the death of a parent or sibling before turning 18—this translates to an estimated 11,000 youth bereaved. Among youth deaths, homicide is the #1 cause (33%). Aside from birth-related deaths, suicide is the #3 cause of death among youth. (CDC Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model, CDC).

Project Title: Oakland Freedom Schools
Project Description:

Lincoln’s Oakland Freedom Schools (OFS) is a six-week summer academic, literacy, and cultural enrichment program. Each summer, OFS serves 120 students, grades K-8, at two OUSD schools- one in East Oakland and the other in West Oakland. OFS prevents summer learning loss, enables summer learning gains, deepens leadership skills, improves self-concept, and strengthens community connections, while addressing the opportunity gap. Parent support is provided via parent meetings and ongoing ‘Chat and Chews’. OFS’ high-energy, hands-on strategies provide a stimulating, strengths-based approach to learning.

Lincoln’s OFS program is unique and innovative in that it focuses specifically on African-American scholars and families. Afrocentric activities support children in developing cultural pride as well knowledge about their ancestry. OFS staff have deep roots in the Oakland community, and hold trusting relationships with students and parents that support consistency and retention in the program. Parent support is provided via parent meetings and Chat and Chews that take place throughout the program. OFS approaches children holistically, strengthening the family unit in order to support the success of each child.

OFS has served East and West Oakland youth since 2012, with powerful results. More than half of each summer’s participants are returning, with the program often having a lengthy waiting list. On average, OFS scholars experience a one year increase in literacy skills in just 6 weeks.

Project Title: Early Prevention and Intervention for Children
Project Description:

VersAbility’s Early Prevention and Intervention for Children Program (EPIC) has been assisting children with developmental delays and their families to reach each developmental milestone. Infancy and early childhood are critical times in human development. Children under the age of 3 with disabilities need specialized therapies to prepare them for success in school, work, and life. Failure to provide these supports comes at a cost to each child, their family, and the community. Through our EPIC program, nearly 700 children with disabilities receive tailored therapies annually, maximizing their abilities and future potential. VersAbility’s EPIC program provides free developmental screenings for any child under the age of 3 living in Hampton and Newport News. VersAbility serves each referral, regardless of budget constraints or the family’s ability to pay. These children have developmental delays, atypical development, and/or handicapping conditions, some of these children are suffering from abuse and neglect, babies born as early as 23 weeks gestation, babies with birth injuries, brain injuries, babies with neurological difficulties, autism, speech delay, babies exposed prenatally to drugs, babies who are deaf, blind, and multi-disabled. Concurrently many of the children with disabilities we serve live in poverty. VersAbility plans to offer funds to families of disabled children for needed items such as, diapers, formula, emergency clothing, in times of need. This will allow parents of disabled children anonymity without introduction to another agency.
