Project Title: Olympians in Life Program
Project Description:

PWF has provided fencing training and academic enrichment programming for underserved youth in the greater New York City area for 30 years. The Olympians in Life program promotes an active lifestyle and develops critical life skills through fencing and academic support, and offers structured, high-quality programming at little to no cost for students, most of whom come from low-income families and are Black and/or Latino/a and nearly half are girls.

Our program empowers students to excel both in the classroom and on the fencing strip. Coach-mentors not only teach fencing techniques and strategies, but also serve as positive role models. After fencing, students receive academic support from a qualified team of educators and professionals. Our students receive subject tutoring and standardized test preparation to strengthen their skills and set them up for academic success. In-person and online tutoring is available at least twice a week for students.

The program boasts a 100% graduation rate, with over 95% of students attending college or university and over 80% improving their GPA each year. PWF is the only community-based fencing program in the nation that consistently prepares youth to compete in the sport’s highest echelons while also providing high-quality academic enrichment.

Our Founder, Peter Westbrook, emphasizes that this program is "more than just about creating Olympians in fencing, we create Olympians in life."

Over the past few years, the pandemic made it challenging to raise funds for PWF and greatly limited program participation due to health and safety concerns. This year, we are excited to significantly increase participation and operate at full capacity. As such, PWF opened enrollment to more scholar-athletes and managed this growth by hiring additional coach-mentors and tutors to handle the increased scholar-athletes. A grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would significantly support our program’s expansion and operations for 2023-2024.
