Project Title: Oakland Freedom Schools
Project Description:
Lincoln’s Oakland Freedom Schools (OFS) is a six-week summer academic, literacy, and cultural enrichment program. Each summer, OFS serves 120 students, grades K-8, at two OUSD schools- one in East Oakland and the other in West Oakland. OFS prevents summer learning loss, enables summer learning gains, deepens leadership skills, improves self-concept, and strengthens community connections, while addressing the opportunity gap. Parent support is provided via parent meetings and ongoing ‘Chat and Chews’. OFS’ high-energy, hands-on strategies provide a stimulating, strengths-based approach to learning.
Lincoln’s OFS program is unique and innovative in that it focuses specifically on African-American scholars and families. Afrocentric activities support children in developing cultural pride as well knowledge about their ancestry. OFS staff have deep roots in the Oakland community, and hold trusting relationships with students and parents that support consistency and retention in the program. Parent support is provided via parent meetings and Chat and Chews that take place throughout the program. OFS approaches children holistically, strengthening the family unit in order to support the success of each child.
OFS has served East and West Oakland youth since 2012, with powerful results. More than half of each summer’s participants are returning, with the program often having a lengthy waiting list. On average, OFS scholars experience a one year increase in literacy skills in just 6 weeks.
