Project Title: School Student Ministries
Project Description:

The Ladies of Charity Calvert County Food Pantry has two primary ministries that focus on enhancing the lives of children under the age of 18; Backpack/school supplies (annual) and Heart F.E.L.T. (Feeding Empty Little Tummies) (weekly)

Every year clients of the food pantry are given the opportunity to submit the names of their children for whom they wish to receive a backpack filled with school supplies prior to the start of school. The supply list is obtained from the local schools and each back pack is filled with an assortment of pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, markers, tissues, hand sanitizers, etc based on their age group; elementary, middle or high school. The current cost of the supplies is between $20-24 each not including the backpacks. This past year we distributed 171 filled backpacks. The total costs for this ministry are between $5600-7300 which is largely dependent on the additional costs for the backpacks.

Several years ago the Ladies of Charity was approached by local school counselors to help provide weekend meals for their elementary and middle school students whose families are on assistance. The counselors give us the initials and grades of the students and we provide food for seven meals to feed them over the weekends; three dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches plus snacks. The food is placed in a backpack with the student’s initials to protect their privacy and delivered to the school every Thursday. The empty backpacks are picked up at the beginning of the next week and refilled. The costs for the food is $18 per week, annual costs are over $14,000. The program runs through the summer.

Funds for both of these ministries are primarily obtained from generous donations and grants such as this.

Project Description:

Culture Shifting Foundation is a new nonprofit (501c3) organization whose mission is to narrow the racial inequality gap and increase wealth creation for people of color and we focus on Healthcare, Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital to achieve our goals. The main objective of our Black Wealth Success Stories program is to help narrow the racial wealth gap by providing examples of successful businesspeople of color to serve as role models that inspire, motivate and educate future generations of entrepreneurs.

We believe in the adage: “if you can see it, you can be it.” – Elizabeth Marvel, and we are building a large-scale library showcasing and celebrating the accomplishments of successful individuals of color to drive positive thinking, inspiration and action (in partnership with Harvard, HBCUs and other higher learning institutions). We are interviewing successful individuals and documenting their stories which are relevant to the black community as they provide current and future generations with information that can be used to achieve success and overcome challenges. The Black Wealth Success Stories program’s objectives align significantly with the Harvard Business School Racial Equity Plan to provide a platform for the voices of diversity and inclusion to increase scholarship at the intersection of race and business. The Black Wealth Success Stories will be published and distributed through select media channels, schools, universities and the public to drive action among tens of thousands in communities of color and to disrupt the narrative that says, “there are not enough black role models or examples of black success.”

Today’s Date: 10/13/2022
Requested Amount: 10,000.00

Project Title: Golden Bell Grant Program
Project Description:

The Golden Bell Education Foundation awards grants to Boca Raton public school teachers and administrators for programs that support the development of business skills and workforce readiness. At the elementary school level, we mainly fund requests that support literacy and the development of reading. Students reading at grade level by grade three is crucial to their long-term success. At the middle school level, we focus on experiential education as it relates to career and/or academic exploration and development and/or the core curriculum. An example would be a program that would introduce students to different career paths or options. Lastly, at the high school level we support career and/or academic preparation as it relates to the core curriculum and/or academy curriculum. Most, if not all, Boca Raton public high schools have academies. The academies provide hands on experience in specific career fields, such as the medical academy, culinary academy, teaching academy, etc. These academies do not receive any additional funding from the district, and they have very limited resources. Every year, our grant application portal is open for a six-week period for teachers to apply. Once the portal has closed, the Golden Bell Board of Directors review each and every request. Grants are awarded in September at the Golden Bell Breakfast. The Foundation awarded over $110,000 for the 2022-23 school year and hopes to continue increasing that amount in the years to come.

Project Title: Islamic Center of Detroit Food Security Program
Project Description:

The mission of the Islamic Center of Detroit (ICD) is to serve the most vulnerable people within Metropolitan Detroit through the Muslim faith, Islamic principles, and a fundamental belief in assisting others. In following with this mission, ICD has served over 2,500 individuals (or 500 families of 5) with food from our food pantry each week, free of charge, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although we have been able to meet the demand for food security in school children and their families, we have discovered a growing need amongst the unemployed, disabled, and senior populations. In fact, due to the continued rise in Covid-19 positive cases, requests for assistance from these citizens have increased three-fold amongst our constituency. We know that expanding this program to add more disabled, homebound, and senior aged citizens will be successful because we currently have the capacity to serve over 135,000 meals per week to school age children (under 18) in metro Detroit alone.
Specifically, through the ICD Emergency Covid-19 Emergency Food Security Program, we will expand the existing food pantry program to serve 100 unique citizens each week in metro Detroit by providing them with food pantry items, including: canned goods, vegetables, fruits, bread, beans, and pasta. This means that and additional 3,000 unique citizens that are isolated at home, in assisted living, homeless shelters, or on the street, will be served monthly; thus, meeting this ever-expanding food insecurity need.

Project Description:

Scorpion Control Center is a community based Initiative created and managed by refugees to address the issue of the high rate of Scorpion stings and snakebites among refugees living in Kakuma refugee camp/camp. The project conducts research on venomous species, gets relevant information about them, picture them, makes catalogs containing images with informations to help us build a speech for the community wellness, children safety, and protection of species as they play a role in the ecosystem. The project conducts education by organizing workshops, sensitization program, talks on local radio stations. The stings and bites have become as a second threat to refugees after malaria for two decades since the creation of the camp. Yet no one and nothing has been put in place to educate refugees to keeping safe in such environment. Our struggles seeing loved ones dying from Stings and bites have inspired us to face our sadness, fears and anxiety by learning about these creatures. We then would like to have a center as our physical location where we will be welcoming visitors, community members who seek for advice. We would like to conduct short courses in environmental literacy and protection of species to empower youth get a new mindset, a new culture of being solutionaries. The sensitization campaign we conducted as a pilot into schools gave us a picture of how much this project is needed by everyone. If you support us, we will be organizing regularly our program in the community, in schools in order to get everyone present to the safety of all.
