The Ladies of Charity Calvert County Food Pantry has two primary ministries that focus on enhancing the lives of children under the age of 18; Backpack/school supplies (annual) and Heart F.E.L.T. (Feeding Empty Little Tummies) (weekly)
Every year clients of the food pantry are given the opportunity to submit the names of their children for whom they wish to receive a backpack filled with school supplies prior to the start of school. The supply list is obtained from the local schools and each back pack is filled with an assortment of pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, markers, tissues, hand sanitizers, etc based on their age group; elementary, middle or high school. The current cost of the supplies is between $20-24 each not including the backpacks. This past year we distributed 171 filled backpacks. The total costs for this ministry are between $5600-7300 which is largely dependent on the additional costs for the backpacks.
Several years ago the Ladies of Charity was approached by local school counselors to help provide weekend meals for their elementary and middle school students whose families are on assistance. The counselors give us the initials and grades of the students and we provide food for seven meals to feed them over the weekends; three dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches plus snacks. The food is placed in a backpack with the student’s initials to protect their privacy and delivered to the school every Thursday. The empty backpacks are picked up at the beginning of the next week and refilled. The costs for the food is $18 per week, annual costs are over $14,000. The program runs through the summer.
Funds for both of these ministries are primarily obtained from generous donations and grants such as this.
