Project Title: Best Buddies in Palm Beach Friendship and Leadership Program
Project Description:

Best Buddies Friendship Programs represent one of our organization’s four key mission pillars. These programs build one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social interactions while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. Through their participation, people with IDD form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences, and activities that many other individuals enjoy. They are also given opportunities to learn leadership skills such as writing and giving speeches, advocacy, teamwork, and so much more.

At each school, a faculty advisor works alongside student leaders to recruit students with and without IDD to join the chapter and be matched. Best Buddies requires that new friends contact each other once per week and that they spend time together at least twice per month. One major key to the success of our project design is the one-year commitment required of all buddy pairs. This continuity allows for meaningful friendships to develop while providing a mutually supportive community for participants.

Goals for this project include:
• Increase opportunities for socialization and inclusion of people with IDD
• Help individuals with and without IDD develop social skills critical to furthering education opportunities and employment options
• Provide opportunities for leadership development
• Increase awareness of the abilities of people with IDD in students and community members

We respectfully request $10,000 to help support our friendship and leadership program at 39 schools throughout Palm Beach. Funding for this project will bring together 1,067 students in 2 elementary schools, 13 middle schools, 21 high schools, and 3 colleges with and without IDD in inclusive, positive, and supportive social interactions in our chapters. Our Program Manager will also work to continue expansion into new schools in our community.

Project Title: LifeCampUSA
Project Description:

LifeCampUSA guides young men who are left in the aftermath of losing a father while serving in the United States military or law enforcement service on a path toward Biblical fortitude, personal resilience, and restorative healing so that they may live up to their full potential and become community leaders through service. At this critically formative stage of establishing their identity, values, attributes, and goals, these sons are left to navigate life without the crucial aid of a father. Whether their father was killed in action, a training accident or suicide, we seek to walk alongside these young men to guide them where they are at now, in life’s toughest moments and beyond.
LifeCampUSA is a program of the Hunt4Life Foundation. Started in 2021 to meet the needs of the young men left in the wake of tragedy after the death or permanent separation from their fathers, we offer these middle school sons a fully paid week-long wilderness experience. We focus on military and law enforcement to honor the sacrifice of those heroes and care for their families as they would wish. Since our inception, we have partnered with individuals and organizations across the country to serve and support these worthy families.

Project Title: POP Preventive Education Program
Project Description:

As an integral part of our mission, Zoë Ministries is committed to protecting youth from the dangers of predators and trafficking. Our trafficking preventive education program uses Power Over Predators, an evidence-based curriculum, designed for 6th-12th grade students. In presentations offered in large scale, classroom, small group, or virtual settings, students are given the tools to recognize trafficking attempts and understand the dangers of cyberbullying, internet pornography, and sexting. Topics such as healthy relationships and personal boundaries are also discussed. The curriculum also satisfies Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and Erin’s Law educational requirements. Preventive education presentations are held for public, Christian and charter middle and high schools, youth organizations, and church groups.
According to Polaris Project, nearly 65% of trafficking enticement efforts are initiated by family or intimate partners/marriage proposals. The 2020 Federal Human Trafficking Report indicates 89% of child victims in active 2020 criminal sex trafficking cases were between 14-17 years old. The Thorn Foundation Presentations found the average age of entry into commercial sexual exploitation is between 12-14 years old. Based on this information, our presentations strive to help students identify the behaviors, methods, and venues predators use to lure victims. Participants are also introduced to the parts of the brains responsible for impulsive behavior and differing characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships. The Power of Predators curriculum and preventive education equip students with the information necessary to make better relational choices and protect themselves from trafficking vulnerabilities.

Requested Amount: $6,300

Project Title: Puppet Shows Expansion to Lower-Budget Schools
Project Description:

At NYC Kids Project, our primary goal is to help students embrace the differences and commonalities of all people and to create communities of acceptance and inclusion. To achieve this goal, our objectives for the students we serve include:
1) Creating an inclusive worldview for students, helping them to reflect on both self and others and to develop a deeper understanding of themselves in relation to their community; 2) Moving students from a fear of differences to curiosity; 3) Establishing connections to help students feel safe in asking questions and sharing their experiences; 4) Enabling students to recognize that each person is unique and has a purpose; 5) Helping students to acknowledge differences and then move beyond them to recognize our commonalities.

The content and issues explored through NYC Kids Project programs become more complex as students get older. Through the magic of theatre, we invite children to engage in dialogue with our puppets, ask challenging or awkward questions, and open themselves to new ways of seeing themselves and the people around them as unique individuals who are a vital part of the community. For example, Renaldo, our puppet character who is blind, often gets asked how he can play ball, read, or tell time. Mark, who has cerebral palsy, shares how he navigates the New York City he loves, and deals with the teasing he sometimes experiences due to his different way of speaking. Students have many questions, to which our teaching artists respond, and they have stories of their own to share. All of this helps guide them towards a refined sense of community and acceptance.

We are currently seeking funding that would enable us to expand our reach and provide our programming at free or reduced rates to schools that would otherwise be unable to pay.

Project Title: Healthcare Access – Back to School Physicals Initiative
Project Description:

Shepherd’s Hope with support of volunteer pediatric providers will continue to deliver essential health services for children with the Pediatric back to school physicals initiative across Central Florida. Without these physicals, children cannot start school or play sports. Children are required by Florida state law to demonstrate proof of immunization and an annual examination, prior to enrollment in a Florida state public school.
Now more than every it is important to get children connected to health providers. To date we have not changed the fact that the second-highest number of children without health insurance live in Florida. Last year, Shepherd’s Hope ensured physicals for 340 children. This year we forecast serving up to 800 children of the uninsured families.
Shepherd’s Hope respectfully requests the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation to join us in increasing the reach and impact of the Back-to-School program that has become a vehicle to bridge the coverage gap by providing free access to high quality healthcare to underserved and uninsured children while mitigating the tremendous financial implications to the community and other healthcare providers.

Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: Eliada Academy Curriculum Advancement
Project Description:

Eliada’s mission is Helping Children Succeed. Through both prevention and intervention services, Eliada tackles the growing rates of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that impact social determinants of health for children in Western North Carolina. We provide a full-service continuum of care to youth from cradle to career.
We are seeking funding for Eliada Academy, a non-profit educational institution that provides educational and therapeutic services for school-aged youth in our Day and Residential Treatment programs. Our Academy serves high-risk students with a history of mental illness and/or emotional and behavioral problems. The vulnerable children we serve are food insecure, have experienced family disruptions and toxic stress in the home, experienced abuse and neglect, and have been in systems of care for much of their life. Our students need a structured program beyond what is available at most educational institutions to succeed. Eliada Academy combines trauma-informed therapeutic practices with education and provides one-on-one attention designed to encourage individual success. Services are delivered in the context of a therapeutic milieu six hours a day, five days a week (Monday through Friday) except for designated holiday periods. While in the Academy, students learn skills to help them succeed, such as learning ways to manage emotions, developing communication skills, developing confidence and self-esteem, building positive relationships, learning to take responsibility for choices and actions, and anger and stress management.
Currently, we only have 2 staff teaching 13 youths. For our older children, this limits the capacity to offer a wide range of courses. For high school students, this is determinantal to their progress, as those who need to stay with us for longer periods end up falling further behind in school. Thus, we are seeking funds to support further accreditation for our teachers and fees for virtual high school credit courses.

Project Title: 2023 Process Intensive for Young Artists
Project Description:

The arts are vital to every community, and YoungArts is grateful to play a role in encouraging and supporting the young artists who will contribute to the world in meaningful ways. The 2023 Process Intensive will provide YoungArts award winners—artists between the ages of 15–18—with life-changing access to tools and experiences that will help them pursue a career in the arts.

This program was developed following direct feedback from young artists: as artists faced severe joblessness during a global health crisis, young and emerging artists especially, YoungArts learned that they seek equitable training on artistic craft and creative process. This type of instruction is often only available in graduate school or through professional experiences, limited opportunities for young artists.

The Process Intensive will take place April 13-16, 2023 and will invite 80 young artists from across the country to Miami for an all-expense-paid, three-day workshop. Participating artists will engage in classes that delve into creative process (sourcing inspiration, critique, reflection, etc), how to strengthen one’s voice as an artist, and how to work in a group setting. Artists will share their work throughout the program and come together on the final day for an open mic presentation. This program offers each artist valuable time with renowned guest artists so they can receive feedback that is specific to them and their practice. We aim to provide artists with opportunities to learn from industry leaders, create and share their artwork and strengthen their individual artistic voices so that they may confidently and adeptly pursue a profession in the arts.

This program is an organizational priority and represents an evolution of how to best serve young artists. We would be immensely grateful for The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation’s support of this initiative, and thank you for your consideration.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/29/22
Requested Amount: 10000

Project Title: JFS Richmond’s Partnership for Behavioral Health in the East End
Project Description:

The Partnership for Behavioral Health in the East End (PBHEE) is JFS’ response to a dramatic disparity: almost every child living in the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) communities in the city’s East End have faced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which are linked to chronic health conditions, mental illness, substance abuse, and even physical changes in a growing brain. One Community Health Worker (CHW) said in a focus group: “If you live here, you’ve experienced trauma.”
Trauma-informed mental healthcare for children, youth, and their family members can help mitigate the consequences of ACEs and strengthen children’s and families’ resilience. But, financial, cultural, and institutional barriers prevent many low-income children from accessing the counseling services they need, and Richmond is a federally-designated Mental Health Professional Shortage Area.

The PBHEE operates like a normal therapist’s office, but without the long bus ride or the threat of being turned away because of issues with Medicaid. The program is already operating in its first location. Each RRHA community has a Resource Center in the neighborhood, staffed by a CHW, that hosts rotating health services. The CHWs are well-known and respected by community residents, and they schedule appointments, remind them about appointments, and solve issues with Medicaid enrollment. Clients, youth aged 5 – 21 and their families, visit their community’s Resource Center for counseling appointments.

After an intake interview and in consultation with the family, the counselor develops a customized counseling plan for each child and/or their family member in order to achieve goals including:
• Help children/youth improve their relationships, feelings about themselves, and ability to deal with problems.
• Support the child/youth by teaching skills to handle stress, manage their emotions, and tackle everyday challenges.
• Reduce the harmful effects of ACEs and prevent further ACEs through trauma-informed counseling tailored to youths’ specific needs.
