Project Title: Project Classics Arts Education Initiative
Project Description:

The mission of Project Classics is to give students the tools to create, empower, and connect. It is organized around the belief that theatre belongs to all people and is designed to bring The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s successful brand of theatre to young audiences through exploration of the creative process and positive social engagement. Project Classics provides the space for artistic exploration and personal development that allows students to connect with each other, their community at large, and weave themselves into the varied, complex cultural tapestry of New York City. This multifaceted program brings productive, positive paths to the forefront, encourages students to expand their ideas of social responsibility, enhances cultural literacy, and develops life skills that are valuable beyond the artistic field.

The majority of schools in under-served/ low-income communities have limited resources to pay for art teachers and, more often than not, arts education is left to overburdened teachers without the formal training to implement such programs effectively. Dance is relegated as a unit in Physical Education. Theatre is often left to classroom teachers in elementary schools or to the Language Arts teachers in middle and high schools. And music and art teachers employed by the Department of Education are often split between several schools.

CTH works closely with schools and community-based organizations to create FREE in school and out of school time programming for grades K to12 to implement various arts education residencies.

Our team of professional artists, with experience across all theatre disciplines, guides the student participants in their discovery. The artistic processes shared by all arts disciplines include creating, performing, producing, presenting, responding, and connecting. These processes are not just relegated to the arts — it is about giving students the life and academic skills they need to think critically, both independently and collaboratively.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: March 14, 2022
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: A Bed of My Own
Project Description:

This request is for support of Sweet Dream Makers’ A Bed of My Own program, which provides children and parents in need with safe, clean beds at no cost to the family.

SDM fulfills the immediate need for families lacking the basic necessities of home, determined through careful vetting of referrals from case managers from 75+ partner social service agencies, such as American Association of Caregiving Youth. These community partners identify families in need and SDM responds case by case with beds, furniture, and houseware solutions tailored specifically to each family’s situation. Leveraging relationships with area furniture companies and low-cost suppliers, each recipient is provided with: a new mattress, mattress encasement to protect against bed bugs and bed-wetting, box spring, bed frame, bedding including sheets, comforter, and pillows chosen by the children.

For children and teens, inadequate sleep leads to health and education issues with potentially devastating long-term consequences. Students who are not well-rested struggle academically, emotionally, and socially. Lack of childhood sleep greatly increases the risk for obesity, diabetes, and mental health challenges. These hurdles drastically limit the potential for well-being and success for the most vulnerable members of our community – but these risks can be significantly reduced by providing children and families with safe, clean, and appropriate beds.

Today, SDM provides over 300 beds per month to children and families in need at an average cost of $250 per person. We are the only local nonprofit focused specifically on beds, bedding, and essential furniture as a critical component of safety, security, and personal dignity for families in need. To date, we have proudly provided 10,500+ beds to 4,800+ families and provide more than 300 families with other essential furniture ever year. A grant of $5,000 will provide 20 local children with A Bed of Their Own.

Total Project Budget: $948,983

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Funding for A Bed of My Own is entirely made up of individual donations, grants and foundation support, and event proceeds. In 2022 we are on track to raise approximately $541,000 in grants, $505,000 from events, $108,000 from individual and other contributions. More than 50% of our funding comes in Q4 allowing us to start the 2023 off running. Grantors include: Boca West Fdn, The Jim Moran Fdn, Pulte Family CF, Hands on Tzedakah, McNally Family Fdn, Leslie L Alexander Fdn, BallenIsle CF, Pat Moran Family Fdn.

Today’s Date: March 15, 2022
Requested Amount: $10,000

Project Title: BRYC’s College Mentor Program
Project Description:

It’s a common misconception that all students who perform well academically will attain college success. This assumption ignores or underestimates resource gaps that cause 89 percent of lower-income students nationally to drop out of college. A systemic lack of academic, financial, and personal support during the college application process leaves high-achieving, under-resourced students in Baton Rouge unable to access higher education and become leaders and innovators for Louisiana.

BRYC was founded in 2009 when a high school teacher realized even his brightest students would struggle to realize college success due to a dearth of resources. Today, we provide best-in-class college preparatory services – for free – to 250 high school “Fellows,” preparing them to enter, persist in, and graduate from college. Closing out our 13th year, BRYC’s 509 alumni have collectively earned $47 million in scholarships and boast an 80 percent persistence rate – five times the national average for lower-income students.

BRYC humbly requests $10,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation to support our College Mentor Program, which continuously delivers impressive results. Our 12th class (2021) received 391 college acceptances and $10.7 million in gift aid. Ninety-four percent are enrolled in college; 74 percent with less than $5,500 of debt/year. We ask the Hermanowski Foundation to support this program because, quite simply, it works.

In 2022-2023, BRYC’s 100 Senior Fellows will receive:
– 1:1 support from dedicated BRYC College Counselors and trained College Mentors
– Robust essay coaching
– Comprehensive ACT preparation
– Weekly college rep Q&As
– Min. $250 direct financial assistance

In fall 2022, Fellows will focus on ACT, FAFSA, and submitting applications. In spring 2023, Fellows will apply for scholarships, choose their school, and plan their college budget. They will cap off senior year with “College 101,” BRYC’s eight-week course focused on the transition to college life.

Project Title: Children’s Services to Independence Program
Project Description:

The purpose of Children’s Services to Independence (CSTI) is to guarantee that BVI youngsters participate in vital therapeutic, recreational, and educational programs to maximize their growth and self-sufficiency. In Broward County, CSTI now serves 97 BVI children under 13 and their parents. The Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program at LHOB serves 42 children ranging in age from newborn to five years. The remaining 55 are children between the ages of 6 and 13, served by LHOB’s KIDS (Keys to Independence) Program.

Babies and toddlers learn to use their remaining vision and all of their senses (hearing, touch, taste, smell, and proprioceptive). Cognitive skills, communication, assistive technology, and compensating abilities are all addressed in play therapy. Instructors also teach personal hygiene, socialization skills, and fine/gross motor abilities. Our staff conducts assessments and develops an Individual Education Plan for each client.

During non-school days, Saturdays, and the summer months, older children, aged 6 to 13, participate in year-round programming. Safe travel skills, age-appropriate cooking and self-care procedures, Braille, computers and adaptive communication devices, courteous social interaction, and self-advocacy are all taught through activities. Our agency uses video conference lessons, small in-person instruction, and socially distanced activities. Parents receive information and help from case managers and instructors about options not available at LHOB. Our staff specifically aids families in adjusting to distance learning and offering additional materials for children to study online.
Children in the CSTI program often have a variety of disabilities. As a result, BVI children are frequently excluded from the BCPS Visually Impaired Program. CSTI bridges the gap between academic and life success for these children. Children have access to and opportunity to grow and advance their Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics skills through the CSTI curriculum. Equipment required for educational and social advancement is included in the services.

Project Title: The Butterfly Program: Giving Help and Hope to Local Children with Cancer
Project Description:

"Your child has cancer" are possibly the worst words a parent can hear. As a parent you wonder how you failed to protect your little one. That guilt only gets stronger and more intense if treatment doesn’t work and the goal turns from treatment and cure, to comfort and quality of life. At POST, we believe every child has the right to as much dignity and quality of life as possible. We give these families emotional and financial support so they can focus on what is truly important – easing their child’s suffering.
Our proposal is to maintain the depth and breadth of services we’ve given to children who are losing their battle with cancer while helping families with food, housing, and basic needs. In other words, our focus is on meeting the emotional and financial needs of families during their time of crisis.
Even though treatment is saving more lives, Palm Beach County is getting patients with increasingly complex childhood cancers as the reputation of quality care spreads. 20% of children will die from their cancer and more families are choosing to keep their child at home during their final days. Excellence in palliative care has been particularly hard to maintain as funding for these services has not kept pace with growth of client needs.
We cannot change devastating medical outcomes but POST therapists support the family through the darkest time of their lives. Emotional support comes from therapists who help the family make difficult decisions, sit with them through tough conversations with physicians, and are bedside at every stage – including at the end of life. POST also helps financially depleted families with housing, transportation, and food to allow them to focus on their child.

Project Title: Foster Grandparents Program (FGP) for At-Risk Children
Project Description:

The Hermanowski Foundation’s grant will supplement the following expenses in our Foster Grandparents Program (FGP): 8 tablets for Virtual Remediation; Direct Costs such as uniforms, stipends, travel reimbursements, etc. for Grandparents; and a portion of the Program Director’s time.

Coming alongside teachers, senior adults in FGP develop a positive rapport with students by providing individualized attention, making them feel cared for and loved. This in turn motivates the children to work harder, making improvements both in their learning and social skills. Because of these relationships that make such a difference, we must keep our Grandparents connected to these students.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: Tasks aligned to each child’s Academic Progress Plan ensure positive strides to meeting objectives and include but are not limited to:
– reading aloud to students
– listening to students read
– teaching vocabulary words
– assisting with reading comprehension and math skills
– teaching basic grooming/personal hygiene care
– modeling situationally-appropriate behaviors

PROGRAM BENEFITS:
-Individualized academic remediation focused on specific objectives for students to meet
-A trained, caring adult mentor for children who motivates them to succeed
-Support for teachers in low-performing schools

During the 2022-2023 school year, 80-100 Foster Grandparents will provide 20 hours a week of individualized support to approximately 800 students, for a total of approximately 80,000 hours; understandably so, these logistics may change as additional closures may happen or access to provide virtual services is not funded.

The Foster Grandparent Program changes the lives of children as they receive support to ensure their academic success from a trained adult who cares about them, leveraging the wisdom and time of our senior adults. Our community is changed as students find literacy success and move on the path to graduation and our senior adults stay integrated into the fabric of society.

Project Title: RS SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Project Description:

Our mission is to utilize the power of teams as the vehicle to promote education, reinforce values, and provide our youth with a safe environment to play, learn and grow. The RS Scholars Program is designed to bridge the social class opportunity gap. Our goal is to improve the lives of underserved youth. Through academic and social-emotional support, we
have been extremely successful in turning the dream of becoming a first-generation college student into a reality
for many children.

The grant would provide fellowships known as the RS Scholars Program for eligible scholars. Specifically, for each fellowship recipient, it would fund an academic advisor who would develop and manage an individualized educational and advocacy plan for each student; tuition support to attend a high-quality private High School; admissions testing preparation and expenses; SAT/ACT preparation courses and college advising.

Further, all our scholar-athletes who are part of the RS Scholars Program are given the chance to participate in our competitive team sports program at no cost. These RS Scholars are not only given the opportunity of being part of a team, they are given a surrogate family and a bridge for them to connect with family, school, and community. All athletic costs (coach/mentors, training, uniforms, tournament fees and travel expenses) are included.

RSYF is dedicated to the mission of bringing equity to education. We differ from larger organizations in our focus on and ability to provide solutions tailored to meet our participants’ specific needs. We understand that education is best delivered in a dynamic and engaging environment, and we are confident that by leveraging our nationally recognized athletic program and following a carefully planned program structure we can drive significant scholastic improvements as well as lay a strong foundation for college and career success.

Project Title: Children and Youth Mental Wellness Program
Project Description:

Our Children and Youth Mental Wellness Program serves Palm Beach County (PBC) children/youth 3-18 who would otherwise be denied services due to inability to afford. Serving this need since 2012 and with the ramifications of Covid, the need has never been greater; in 2021, we provided services to 170 children/youth, making up 30-40% of our client base. Our mental wellness services help children/youth suffering from trauma regulate their emotions, stop self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation/attempts, and prevents costly and additionally traumatic inpatient placement.

For PBC’s most in-need children/youth, services are:

• FREE to those who qualify, as funding allows
• provided by qualified therapists experienced in child/youth trauma
• offered in English, Spanish and Creole, reducing language barriers
• available without a waitlist
• provided through several easily accessible ‘avenues to care’ to expand access for ALL; in-office, telehealth/phone and aboard the Mobile Hope Clinic (MHC)

Funding will support direct mental healthcare services to children/youth, where services can be received at the most convenient ‘avenue to care’ for the client; in-office, via telehealth/phone & now through the MHC. The MHC is our most innovative service expansion effort to date, where making services available to ALL is our primary objective. The MHC operates on our highly successful ‘community-partner model’; partnering with other local agencies where children/youth already visit for other services, thereby eliminating the hardship of additional travel to us.

Clients without insurance and living below poverty level are offered 8-10 FREE sessions. Those that do not qualify for free sessions are offered extremely reduced rates based on a sliding scale starting at $45 per session. Your support in the amount of $10,000 will allow us to offer these described services to approximately 20 at risk children/youth in 2023.
