Project Title: The Butterfly Program: Giving Help and Hope to Local Children with Cancer
Project Description:

"Your child has cancer" are possibly the worst words a parent can hear. As a parent you wonder how you failed to protect your little one. That guilt only gets stronger and more intense if treatment doesn’t work and the goal turns from treatment and cure, to comfort and quality of life. At POST, we believe every child has the right to as much dignity and quality of life as possible. We give these families emotional and financial support so they can focus on what is truly important – easing their child’s suffering.
Our proposal is to maintain the depth and breadth of services we’ve given to children who are losing their battle with cancer while helping families with food, housing, and basic needs. In other words, our focus is on meeting the emotional and financial needs of families during their time of crisis.
Even though treatment is saving more lives, Palm Beach County is getting patients with increasingly complex childhood cancers as the reputation of quality care spreads. 20% of children will die from their cancer and more families are choosing to keep their child at home during their final days. Excellence in palliative care has been particularly hard to maintain as funding for these services has not kept pace with growth of client needs.
We cannot change devastating medical outcomes but POST therapists support the family through the darkest time of their lives. Emotional support comes from therapists who help the family make difficult decisions, sit with them through tough conversations with physicians, and are bedside at every stage – including at the end of life. POST also helps financially depleted families with housing, transportation, and food to allow them to focus on their child.
