Project Title: Foster Grandparents Program (FGP) for At-Risk Children
Project Description:
The Hermanowski Foundation’s grant will supplement the following expenses in our Foster Grandparents Program (FGP): 8 tablets for Virtual Remediation; Direct Costs such as uniforms, stipends, travel reimbursements, etc. for Grandparents; and a portion of the Program Director’s time.
Coming alongside teachers, senior adults in FGP develop a positive rapport with students by providing individualized attention, making them feel cared for and loved. This in turn motivates the children to work harder, making improvements both in their learning and social skills. Because of these relationships that make such a difference, we must keep our Grandparents connected to these students.
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: Tasks aligned to each child’s Academic Progress Plan ensure positive strides to meeting objectives and include but are not limited to:
– reading aloud to students
– listening to students read
– teaching vocabulary words
– assisting with reading comprehension and math skills
– teaching basic grooming/personal hygiene care
– modeling situationally-appropriate behaviors
PROGRAM BENEFITS:
-Individualized academic remediation focused on specific objectives for students to meet
-A trained, caring adult mentor for children who motivates them to succeed
-Support for teachers in low-performing schools
During the 2022-2023 school year, 80-100 Foster Grandparents will provide 20 hours a week of individualized support to approximately 800 students, for a total of approximately 80,000 hours; understandably so, these logistics may change as additional closures may happen or access to provide virtual services is not funded.
The Foster Grandparent Program changes the lives of children as they receive support to ensure their academic success from a trained adult who cares about them, leveraging the wisdom and time of our senior adults. Our community is changed as students find literacy success and move on the path to graduation and our senior adults stay integrated into the fabric of society.
