Project Title: Ending the Silence
Project Description:

NAMI Ending the Silence is a 50-minute program designed for middle and high school audiences. This interactive and transformational presentation is devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative presentation, short videos, and personal testimonies.
A trained two-person team, one being an individual who shares their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition, delivers the program. Students learn about symptoms and indicators of mental illness and are given resources aimed at helping themselves, their friends, or family members who may be in need of support.
At the conclusion of the presentation, students are given resource cards with valuable phone numbers and websites of mental health agencies and youth support services, along with a list of symptoms/warning signs of mental illness. Postcards are mailed home to parents informing them about the presentation.
Why Ending the Silence is Needed
• In Pain in the Nation, a study by the Well-Being Trust and Trust for America’s Health, it was found that “In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic created new, almost inconceivable heights of trauma, grief, stress, and isolation for many Americans…and that younger age groups have had higher rates of reported anxiety or depression symptoms between April 2020 and March 2021 than groups 70+ in age.”

• According to California Senate Bill 224, due to go into effect within two years, “Each school district, county office of education, state special school, and charter school that offers one or more courses in health education to pupils in middle school or high school shall include in those courses instruction in mental health that meets the requirements of this article.” Requirements include promoting mental health wellness and protective factors, ability to identify warning signs, and how to find assistance.

We plan to bring ETS to 3500 students during the 2022/2023 academic year.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 4/16/2022
Requested Amount: $8,000

Project Title: The Troopers Program
Project Description:

The Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps is made up of up to 160 16 to 21-year-olds who spend the summer rigorously rehearsing and performing an 11-minute show playing brass or percussion instruments, spin flags, rifles, and sabers, all while marching a complicated and demanding choreographed drill. The Troopers travel over 10,000 miles each summer to perform in competitions, parades, and other civic functions and are part of Drum Corps International.

Auditions are held throughout the winter, and by May, 160 members will have been offered a position! Also known by fans as "America’s Corps", members begin learning the corps song and begin to reflect their motto, "Honor, Loyalty, and Dedication". Once Spring Training begins, members learn the show for the summer competitive season. These important weeks are when members are shaped into leaders and become part of something bigger than themselves. It is difficult to describe what being a Trooper is all about without experiencing the amount of work and dedication these young people pour their hearts and souls into.

Inclusivity and diversiveness is very important to the Troopers and if a young person wants to march, we don’t want to turn them down because of financial hardship. While lower than most drum corps, tuition is over $4,000 for this 3-month experience and can be difficult for some families. While tuition pays for instruction, food, housing, facilities, equipment, and transportation, some members need financial assistance. Prospective scholarship recipients must provide $400 and start their own Go Fund Me page to demonstrate work on their end. Help from the Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would be invaluable to help young people make their dream of marching in the Troopers a reality. It is our hope that your family foundation can be an integral partner to these hard working youth.

Project Title: LifeCampUSA
Project Description:

LifeCampUSA is a program of the Hunt4Life Foundation. Started in 2021 to meet the needs of the young men left in the wake of tragedy after the death or permanent separation from their fathers. We focus on military and law enforcement to honor the sacrifice of those heroes and care for their family as they would wish. We offer these middle school boys a fully paid week-long wilderness experience. Each participant is matched with a personal mentor who guides them through personal growth and stands with them as they face and overcome challenges throughout the week.
LifeCampUSA guides young men on a path toward personal fortitude, personal resilience, and restorative healing. We mentor middle school sons of fatherless Goldstar military or law enforcement families. At a critical formative stage of establishing their identity, values, attributes, and goals, these sons are left to navigate life without the crucial aid of a father. Whether their father was killed in action, a training accident or suicide, we seek to walk alongside these young men to guide them where they are at now, in life’s toughest moments and beyond.

Project Title: Enhanced Health and Wellness for Middle School Youth
Project Description:

We are asking for funding to help with the initial expansion of our health and wellness programs, called Pure Performance and Fuel Tanks, throughout Cody High School and into Cody Middle School. We believe increased wellness support in the form of pamphlets, advice, workshops, and tastings (i.e. customized meals through Fuel Tanks) will help more kids recognize the importance of good nutrition and lifestyle choices at a much younger age, and will lead to heightened potential as they grow into adulthood.

Since 2018, Cody CAN Youth (CAN for short) has funded health and wellness education and nutrition programs for the Highschool students living in Park County School District 6. Pure Performance is a program in which CAN provides general education, tips, and wellness support to the student body to “fuel individuals’ minds and bodies” so they can reach their maximum potential. Fuel Tanks is a program that falls under Pure Performance, which involves providing local highschool athletic teams with customized meals to help them perform their best while they compete in travel competitions. The goal is to have all Park County School District 6 students understand the connection between their lifestyle choices, nutrition, and their performance in school and on the playing field.

Currently our Fuel Tanks and Pure Performance programs are heavily focused on the Highschool student body population. In 2023, we plan to expand these health and wellness/nutrition programs into Cody Middle School. This will promote lifestyle awareness and nutrition at a much earlier age, which sets up students for success much earlier. It will also help middle school students be more prepared for the demands of highschool and highschool sports, by familiarizing them with some of the wellness-related content they would normally receive once they reach 9th grade.

Proposal Information

Today’s Date: 3/16/2022
Requested Amount: 5000

Project Title: LOI – Birthplace of Country Music Museum General Operating Support
Project Description:

Birthplace of Country Music, Inc. (BCM) consists of 3 branches: The Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM), Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Music Festival and Radio Bristol. Our mission is to perpetuate, promote, and celebrate Bristol’s rich musical heritage; to educate and engage audiences worldwide regarding the history, impact and legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions from which we derive our name; and to create recognition, opportunities, and economic benefit for our local and regional communities.

We kindly request $5,000 towards the museum’s operating expenses which makes a tangible difference to our work as we strive to enable our staff to better direct expertise, time, and resources towards fulfilling the museum’s mission and delivering high-impact educational opportunities, meaningful programming, and engaging experiences to our community and visitors. The museum explores the history, technology, and legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, historic recordings that were integral to early commercial country music. BCMM’s mission is firmly focused on education as we strive to:

– Support our local/regional schools in their learning goals through a variety of curricula-based educational opportunities and resources

– Offer free or low-cost arts- and humanities-based public programming for adults, families, and children

– Deliver outreach programs through community partnerships, the schools, civic organizations, and other events

– Bring engaging temporary exhibits to the museum

– Preserve the region’s musical history and heritage

We do this through school visits, after-school program partnerships, school outreach activities, educational resources, and in-service opportunities for teachers; the museum also hosts public programs including film screenings, lectures/workshops, music performances, family activities, and youth music camps. Through our Smithsonian Affiliation we share our regional history more widely and can tap into the Smithsonian for professional development opportunities, exhibits, educational resources, and programming.

Total Project Budget: Museum Budget : $1,649,122

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): For FY23 BCM has yet to secure funds for general operating support funding for the museum branch. Please note that Birthplace of Country Music, Inc. is three separate branches with individual budgets (museum, festival, radio). At this time no general operating support funding has been confirmed to support the Birthplace of Country Music Museum branch for FY23. Pending grant proposal submissions include: The Mockingbird Foundation – Pick Along Summer Music Camps $5,000 First Horizon Foundation, Education Programming Support $10,000

Project Duration: FY23 (July 1st, 2022 – June 30th, 2023)
Geographical Area Served: BCMM provides arts, culture, and the humanities access to a wide range of visitors (K-12, college students, tourists, scholars, local visitors) from diverse backgrounds; we have welcomed visitors from all 50 states and over 45 countries. We offer free or low-cost programming and discounted or free entry days. The shared main street of the twin cities of Bristol, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee is located on the VA-TN state line, and the Birthplace of Country Music organization serves a diverse community in both cities (total population around 43,000). However, our reach goes much further into Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. For instance, in Virginia, we also work with the counties of Washington, Smyth, Russell, Wise, Dickenson, Scott, Lee, and Buchanan to bring groups to the museum, offer educational outreach experiences, and provide public programs. Bristol and the surrounding region have been hard hit by the decline in coal production and other industry lay-offs and closings. Therefore, our region is diversifying its economy and enhancing quality of life by reaching out to arts organizations and the tourism industry. Much of our audience lives in rural settings, and these areas are key outreach targets for our organization. The region includes numerous Title I schools, including students who are often underserved and disadvantaged; these are an important focus for BCM. The Appalachian Regional Commission classifies the counties in our region as ranging from “At Risk” to “Transitional.” We serve a wide variety of ages: seniors, adults and college students, K-12, and families.
Age Group To Be Served: It is our goal to make all things that we do accessible to the residents of Bristol. Through our programming and mission we serve a community of all ages, from adults to seniors to K-12 and college students. Our educational programming alone is primarily aimed to reach our local and regional schools in Bristol VA, Bristol TN, Washington County, VA, and Sullivan County TN, reaching approximately 1,600 teachers and 23,600 students. However, because we will work to also make the resources accessible virtually, we can potentially serve a much larger teacher/student population.

Project Title: At-Risk and Foster Youth Music Outreach Program
Project Description:

ACS’s Music Outreach program’s primary goal is to bring music education and movement opportunities that foster hope and joy to youth in under-served communities. To do so, ACS partners with: under-funded Title 1 schools (including Meadow, York International, and Welby) in Adams County, Colorado; Shiloh House facilities in five counties in Colorado that serve foster youth; and one community-led arts alliance for Latinx youth in Northglenn, Colorado. Additional goals of the program include: 1) providing sustained music instruction of 45 minutes to one hour per week to encourage true mastery with the hope that youth will continue music instruction throughout their lifetime; 2) providing instruments for under-resourced youth for use at home to encourage practice and family participation; 3) reducing the impact of trauma and increasing emotional healing through music exploration; and 4) providing needs-based scholarships for students to pursue individual instruction at the ACS Studio if desired.

We believe passionately in the power of music to change the lives of all youth, enriching their education and changing the way they engage with the world. We also believe that all children, regardless of their ability to pay, should have the opportunity for music exploration. The current pandemic has illuminated the deep divide that exists between arts education opportunities enjoyed by privileged youth (often white youth) versus the almost non-existent opportunities open to their less-financially privileged peers (often youth of color).

We know the powerful impact music has on young people–enriching their lives in so many ways, including: developing skills to support learning; establishing positive relationships with others; and providing opportunities for personal growth and development. Music education provides youth with a sense of achievement, inspires them and, in turn, inspires others. Every youth should be afforded this opportunity.

Project Title: Early Learning Program
Project Description:

Ellis Early Learning provides the highest quality early education and care for the children of Boston’s working families, regardless of their ability to pay. Ellis stands out for its socio-economically, racially and culturally diverse environment, ranking in the top 9% of early childhood programs nationally. 75% of Ellis children are of color, 65% of our families receive government childcare subsidies, and 15% of our children have open cases with the Department of Children and Families. Our singular mission is to help ALL children develop the social, emotional, and academic skills they need to be successful in school and life. A child’s early experiences are lifelong determinants of health and well-being. Nobel prize winning economist, James Heckman, has devoted much of his career to scientific research supporting the fact that what happens from birth to age 5 drives success in school and life, including positive physical and mental health effects. Ellis embodies and actualizes that belief every day. Ellis programs help to ensure that ALL our children arrive at kindergarten with the foundation they need for success, thereby reducing the achievement gap that disproportionately impacts children of color from low-income households.
Ellis represents essential community infrastructure. Without this support, parents cannot work, reducing family stability and security. Sadly, the economics of our childcare system makes it impossible for Ellis to fully fund our budgetary needs without philanthropic support. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly exacerbated the situation, leading many providers to close classrooms or close entirely, but Ellis is persevering. We continue to advocate for systemic change in the early childhood education sector, but we must rely upon others to help us now. Ellis is resilient, strong enough to weather the last two years, but additional support is needed now, enabling us to drastically improve the current situation.
