Project Title: Early Learning Program
Project Description:
Ellis Early Learning provides the highest quality early education and care for the children of Boston’s working families, regardless of their ability to pay. Ellis stands out for its socio-economically, racially and culturally diverse environment, ranking in the top 9% of early childhood programs nationally. 75% of Ellis children are of color, 65% of our families receive government childcare subsidies, and 15% of our children have open cases with the Department of Children and Families. Our singular mission is to help ALL children develop the social, emotional, and academic skills they need to be successful in school and life. A child’s early experiences are lifelong determinants of health and well-being. Nobel prize winning economist, James Heckman, has devoted much of his career to scientific research supporting the fact that what happens from birth to age 5 drives success in school and life, including positive physical and mental health effects. Ellis embodies and actualizes that belief every day. Ellis programs help to ensure that ALL our children arrive at kindergarten with the foundation they need for success, thereby reducing the achievement gap that disproportionately impacts children of color from low-income households.
Ellis represents essential community infrastructure. Without this support, parents cannot work, reducing family stability and security. Sadly, the economics of our childcare system makes it impossible for Ellis to fully fund our budgetary needs without philanthropic support. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly exacerbated the situation, leading many providers to close classrooms or close entirely, but Ellis is persevering. We continue to advocate for systemic change in the early childhood education sector, but we must rely upon others to help us now. Ellis is resilient, strong enough to weather the last two years, but additional support is needed now, enabling us to drastically improve the current situation.
