Project Title: Building Transformative Relationships to Shape Tomorrow’s Communities
Project Description:

The mission of Communities In Schools of Southwest Virginia is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Established in 2013, CIS of SWVA is a local independent affiliate of Communities In Schools, the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization, both in decreasing dropout rates and increasing graduation rates. We achieve results by providing our unique model of integrated student supports, backed by over forty years of research and implementation. We place student support specialists inside the school to provide our most at-risk students with trauma informed supportive guidance and counseling; social-emotional learning support; academic support; truancy interventions; opportunities to volunteer in the community; college application assistance; community-based mentoring; career/college exposure; parent education and engagement opportunities; and referrals to agencies for mental health, physical health, behavioral health and other basic needs supports. In addition to providing individualized services, whole-school programming is provided aimed at drop-out prevention and access to needed services.

At-risk students are identified as those who live in poverty, are at-risk of dropping out of school and are at a higher risk of experiencing trauma and/or adverse childhood experiences, affecting their ability to be successful in school. At-risk students are more likely to experience child abuse/neglect, have a parent who abuses drugs/alcohol, live in violent neighborhoods, and be witness to a host of adverse behaviors and experiences than their more moderate-income peers. In Southwest Virginia, three out of five students are economically disadvantaged. Of those students, 15% are not graduating on time, 30% are chronically absent and more than 30% are not reading on grade level.
For the 2022-2023 school year, CIS of SWVA will provide individualized, targeted case management to over 1,200 students throughout its network of 36 schools, in addition to providing whole-school supports for 15,000 students.

Project Title: Inside Out Counseling
Project Description:

Since 2002, the ReadyKids Inside Out Program has offered an immediate response to treatment needs of children (ages 2-18) who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect and/or exposure to domestic violence in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties, including rural communities. In FY21, Inside Out served 250 primary victims and 210 secondary victims. The high-level outcomes for the program include:

• Children are socially/emotionally healthy and relate well to others.
• Children experience positive parent/child and family interactions.
• Children receiving services through the Inside Out program are not re-victimized.

To achieve these outcomes, the Inside Out completes the following activities: • Trauma Counselors provide counseling services to children and families who have been victims of crime and/or trauma in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. These services are provided using evidence based treatment strategies, such as Trauma Focus Cognitve Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), as well as play and art therapy techniques. Inside Out is the only program in the ReadyKids service area to provide trauma counseling to children and youth at no-cost to the client. • Trauma Counselors complete an extensive intake assessment and individualized treatment plan. Each client is evaluated using the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) Assessment and/or the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children, evidenced based tools, during the beginning phase of treatment and then again at discharge. • Trauma Counselors consult and collaborate with community organizations and other service providers.

All counseling services are provided at no-cost to the clients for as long as needed.

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): InsideOut has traditionally been funded through Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Victims Fund and The Victims of Crime Act Grant with additional community support from the City of Charlottesville, County of Albemarle, and County of Louisa. Project Title: The All American Boys Chorus
Project Description:

The All American Boys Chorus (AABC) is a music and performing arts program that combines music education with mentoring to help foster the self-confidence, work ethic, and leadership skills necessary to help young men succeed later in life. Adolescence is a time of great change in which friendships and adult role models become increasingly important for many youth. Non-parent adult role models extend vital opportunities and provide support and encouragement that challenge youth to grow and create a positive outlook on their influence over their own lives, families, school, and community. The impact of positive role models on youth development is compounded when both non-parent adults and peers serve as role models for young people. AABC’s programs involve thoughtful educational programming designed to progress these boys through different stages of musical development, transforming them from beginners to seasoned performers and leaders. The key to our program is collaboration and leadership development, which runs through every aspect of our programming. This includes our peer-to-peer mentoring model where more experienced AABC members serve as guides for newer members. The All-American Boys Chorus is a year-long program that includes after-school training sessions, Saturday morning rehearsals, multiple performances, and a Music Camp during the summer. On average, each participant stays with the program for approximately 2-4 years. We believe that every child has the potential for greatness and that music can be a tool to help guide young men through the difficult stages of adolescence while instilling positive qualities that they will carry with them throughout life. Being a member of the chorus goes far beyond learning to read music and master vocal skills. The boys in the program develop leadership skills, experience the benefits of hard work and team work, and are allowed the opportunity for creative expression in a supportive environment.

Project Title: Hygiene Essentials for Low-Income Students
Project Description:

Giving the Basics’ School Nurse Closet Program distributes free personal hygiene supplies to low-income Kansas City area students. We launched the program in 2014 in response to calls from school nurses and counselors. They told us that many of their students had no way to wash their clothes or hair and were going without daily items like toothpaste and soap. As a result, these young people were being ostracized and bullied. They tended to sit at the back of the classroom and do everything they could to avoid being noticed. These students were reluctant to raise their hands, so their participation in class suffered. Too often, they skipped school altogether.
When families cannot afford daily essentials like toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, and deodorant, their young people deal with isolation and ridicule. Our School Program currently provides access to needed products to 160,474 students in 364 public, charter and parochial schools. No other agency in the region provides a similar service.

Project Title: Community Workshops Celebrating Haitian Art
Project Description:

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum is located in western Miami on the main campus of Florida International University (FIU), a top-tier research university with a minority-majority student body of 58,000. The collection of Haitian art at the Frost Art Museum offers a significant opportunity for interdisciplinary research, yet many of the works have never been on view nor have been studied by scholars outside of FIU. The Frost’s collection holds approximately 400 works of Haitian art, primarily 20th-century painting, with a few examples of sculpture and utilitarian objects. This groundbreaking exhibition, on view January 28 – May 28, 2023, aims to contribute to scholarship and public history on the subject of Haiti by inviting scholars, artists, and the community to study and share information about the collection. The resulting exhibition will examine how public spaces are used, navigated, and understood in the context of quotidian life.

South Florida is home to the largest concentration of Haitians living outside Haiti and this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to further connect with the local Haitian communities, as well as to share Haitian art with audiences who may not be familiar with the country’s culture. By forming partnerships with key organizations and bringing aspects of the exhibition to these spaces, this project seeks to directly engage the community and spark dialogue through a series of three free art-making workshops. The Frost will invite professional artists to respond to themes in the exhibition and create projects that explore and celebrate the rich traditions of Haiti. These artist-led workshops will be hosted at various venues across Miami, Florida, and geared towards children ages 6-18 and their families. The artworks produced by the community will be incorporated into the exhibition and shared digitally through the museum’s website and social media channels.

Total Project Budget: $12,750

Project Title: Transplant Families Virtual Conference
Project Description:

Transplant Families is a nonprofit 501c3, that helps families navigate through the challenges of their children going through solid organ or bone marrow transplants. Transplant Families emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community that we too are a part of. We have provided support, education, and inspiration to families across the United States.

Each year Transplant Families hosts a virtual conference to connect families with providers to foster lasting relationships of learning, connecting, and growing through the stages of the pediatric transplant journey. Our goal every year is to bring current experts in the field that impact transplant families directly. Additionally, these conferences help raise money for the distribution and contents of our Welcome Bag Program, scholarships for families that need financial help, and training for our staff members.

Our Welcome Bag Program consists of families a bag full of items that we found helpful when our children were in the hospital; A tote/backpack, water bottle, lip balm, phone charger, hand sanitizer, pen & paper, cloth mask, Howl the Owl book, and window clings. We are always looking to add items as they become available by donations. The bags are delivered by members of the clinical transplant team when it is appropriate for the family. We expect these bags to be delivered to at least 50 of the highest volume pediatric transplant centers, and eventually, expand to all 107.

We are asking for $10,000 in grant funding to help Transplant Families expand our reach to new families and pediatric transplant centers. This funding will be used to help fund our virtual conference, our Welcome Bag Program, financial scholarships for families, and Diversity and Equity staff training.

Project Title: matMatching Grants for our Displaced Disabled scholarship program
Project Description:

ASK has a goal is to raise at least $150,000 in matching Grants for our Displaced Disabled scholarship program from local corporate partners.
Donations received to date total $25,000 to be used to fund Scholarships for this upcoming 21-22 school year.
Students must have spent time in foster care or have a disability identified by an IEP or MET.
Families that choose to place their child in a private school but do not have the economic means to do so, will benefit from this program.

Publicity
Ask conducts community events and sponsors/hosts sporting competitions to raise awareness and funding for our program, which benefits students with disabilities and students that have been displaced to foster care. Our plan includes social media outreach as well as community events to inform the community of our mission and goals. Ask is also reaching out to the schools and families themselves to let them know of the program by attending K-12 schools’ open houses and fundraising events.

Sustainability
Utilizing corporate tax credits, ASK can supplement this side of our program if necessary. Our fundraising team is dedicated to applying for grants and reaching out to donors in the local communities to continue raising money for the program year over year as we anticipate a continual growth of a much-needed program. We are continually contacted by families with disabled children in different states in need of assistance.

Evaluation measurements
As the Displaced and Disabled K-12 School Choice Scholarship Fund grows, and there is an increase of funding from donors to contribute to the program, we will measure the success of this program organically. There is an application specific to this fund so we can track the number of merit applications, awards, and re-awards. In this way, we can continue to track the need and measure the achievement of the ASK mission.
