Project Title: Community Workshops Celebrating Haitian Art
Project Description:

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum is located in western Miami on the main campus of Florida International University (FIU), a top-tier research university with a minority-majority student body of 58,000. The collection of Haitian art at the Frost Art Museum offers a significant opportunity for interdisciplinary research, yet many of the works have never been on view nor have been studied by scholars outside of FIU. The Frost’s collection holds approximately 400 works of Haitian art, primarily 20th-century painting, with a few examples of sculpture and utilitarian objects. This groundbreaking exhibition, on view January 28 – May 28, 2023, aims to contribute to scholarship and public history on the subject of Haiti by inviting scholars, artists, and the community to study and share information about the collection. The resulting exhibition will examine how public spaces are used, navigated, and understood in the context of quotidian life.

South Florida is home to the largest concentration of Haitians living outside Haiti and this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to further connect with the local Haitian communities, as well as to share Haitian art with audiences who may not be familiar with the country’s culture. By forming partnerships with key organizations and bringing aspects of the exhibition to these spaces, this project seeks to directly engage the community and spark dialogue through a series of three free art-making workshops. The Frost will invite professional artists to respond to themes in the exhibition and create projects that explore and celebrate the rich traditions of Haiti. These artist-led workshops will be hosted at various venues across Miami, Florida, and geared towards children ages 6-18 and their families. The artworks produced by the community will be incorporated into the exhibition and shared digitally through the museum’s website and social media channels.
