Project Title: Career Pathways to Independence
Project Description:

The Village is a 40-bed group home facility that opened its doors in May, 2004 to provide a safe haven for abused youth. Youth, ages 13 to 17, are removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect and/or abandonment by the State. The youth are placed at the Village for a few days, months, or sometimes, even years. Many youth will “age out of the system” with us at age 18. The Career Pathways to independence teaches youth, ages 13 – 17, to participate in life skill development and career preparation training. The youth are engaged in community based internships with local businesses and agencies. Participating youth receive a career and interest assessment to provide an understanding of talents, interests, personality and skills in order to establish compatible future work areas and fields of interest. All youth attend seminars on a variety of career and independent living topics, attend weekly focus groups, and are provided with an opportunity to participate in three different work experiences: job shadowing, internship, and/or part-time employment lasting one to three weeks. In addition, participants are provided with an opportunity to open a bank account and learn how to manage it. The community need addressed is the lack of jobs, interpersonal skills and problem solving skills/trainings/opportunities for at-risk youth, compounded with the tragic statistics that abused youth are facing: Abused youth are nine times more likely to consider or attempt suicide which is the leading cause of death for children ages 5-18 years, and abused youth are nine times more likely to become involved in criminal activity and human trafficking.

Project Title: ELEVATE YOUTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Project Description:

Throughout our history, New Beginnings Global Outreach and its affiliate organizations have mentored hundreds of youths on identifying their career choice and obtaining clarity of their life’s purpose. This is done through a methodology that focuses on identifying their strengths, conducting a behavioral and communication profile assessment, encouraging them to dream, eliminating fears and distractions, and ultimately, helping them craft a declaration of their life’s mission statement, which serves as a compass throughout their life’s journey. Our intention is to formalize this program and add a scholarship component of $500.00-$1,000 to 10-20 students who are transitioning from high school to college and may lack the financial resources to even apply for colleges. Our goal is to train a minimum of 100 youths within six months to a year through various trainings, workshops, and individualized sessions. This funding request would assist us primarily with the scholarship portion and our organization would be responsible for the administrative and training costs associated with the program.
On behalf of New Beginnings Global Outreach, I earnestly thank you for your consideration of our grant request and hope to demonstrate through the information provided the desire to serve a segment of the population that is in great need of our services, and our need for financial resources as a means to provide a transformational impact in their lives. We invite you or a representative of your esteemed organization to visit us or discuss this funding request further and to understand how extraordinarily helpful your investment would be. Sincerely, Bruno Portigliatti.

Project Title: Housing Project
Project Description:

Each year, there is more than 800 youth that age out of Arizona’s foster care system. For many, their transition to adulthood and economic self-sufficiency can be abrupt. This disrupts all aspects of their life.

Statistics show nationally, 50% of the homeless population spent time in foster care and that 2-out-3 youth will end up in jail, homeless or dead after aging out of the foster care system within two years. In Arizona, nearly 85% of Arizona’s aged out foster youth struggle to find stable housing. As a result, many youth find themselves homeless or in the process of becoming homeless. That is where Foster Arizona’s Housing Project steps in and helps create a path to self-sufficiency for each of them.

Foster Arizona Housing Project provides homeless youth in our community with transitional housing, basic provisions and life sufficiency skills for those aging out of foster care. The program partners with Keys to Success for supplementary support for mentors, opportunities for growth and learning, educational opportunities, ongoing career exploration and development to aide in housing participants personal and financial stability and self-sufficiency.

A gracious $5,000 grant from the Hermanowski Family Foundation would be used to provide basic provisions, life sufficiency skills trainings and help supplement youths’ housing bills (electricity, water and rent).

Project Title: Expanding Resources, Support, and Services for New Orleans’ Fatherless Boys
Project Description:

Son of a Saint is a Black-led nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of fatherless boys through mentorship, emotional support, development of life skills, exposure to constructive experiences and formation of positive, lasting peer-to-peer relationships. Our mission is to equip fatherless boys with the tools that they need to become productive men. We give them hope, vision, and opportunity through secure and consistent mentorship. Son of a Saint takes a holistic, individualized, and evidence-based approach to addressing fatherlessness. Each year, Son of a Saint selects a group of boys ages 10-12 to join the existing mentees in our program. Almost 83% of our mentees have lost their fathers to death or incarceration, and 12% have witnessed the murders of their own fathers. Within our program, 95% of our mentees identify as young men of color, and 80% live in low-income households. Son of a Saint employs a holistic approach that uses a network of volunteers and partner agencies that enable us to address every boy’s need. Each boy remains a Son of a Saint mentee until he is 18, but we continue to advise and support each mentee in the years that follow. Son of a Saint respectfully requests general operating funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our programming for fatherless boys, a major component of which centers on the intersection of mental health, education, and mentorship. Students with mental health diagnoses and learning disorders are more likely to face suspension and expulsion and are less likely to graduate high school than their peers (Child Mind Institute, 2014). Son of a Saint intervenes early in fatherless boys’ lives offering trauma-focused, evidence-based individual and group counseling to prevent behavioral issues from manifesting that can negatively impact their interpersonal relationships, physical health, and academic performance.

Project Title: Drumming With Dad
Project Description:

Drumming with Dad is a summer immersive parent engagement experience designed to provide opportunities for fathers to bond with their children and other fathers while learning the art of African drumming. Each session is held twice a week, morning and afternoon/evening, to accommodate the schedules of participating fathers.

Father engagement is a vital and integrated aspect of parent, family, and community engagement work (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services). Research shows that fathers tend to have a strong motivation to participate fully in their children’s lives. Drumming with Dad seeks to create a safe space for fathers (and male caregivers) to talk about the challenges and successes of fatherhood while using the drums as metaphors for the family and community. Participants learn the history of drumming and how to use drumming for artistic expression and social connection. Children learn and develop listening, communication, coordination, self-discipline, and cooperation skills. Fathers learn and develop the skills to bond with their children and create meaningful, enriching experiences with them.

CAMP DAD, a tandem three-day outdoor program, runs from Friday to Sunday and will be hosted at a campsite. Last year our camping program took place at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Wellsville, Pennsylvania. From sun-up to sundown fathers and their children ages 5 – 15 are immersed in nature exploration and skill-building activities including hiking, boating, swimming, and arts and crafts.
Collectively, our Drumming with Dad/CAMP DAD program aims to: (1) Increase fathers’ engagement in their children’s learning, (2) Strengthen parent-child relationships through skill-building and exploratory activities, (3) Provide a high quality outdoor recreational experience for underserved children and fathers who might otherwise not have access to such opportunities, and (4) Lay the foundation for program participants to become enthused stewards of community assets and natural resources.

Project Title: Providing Early Support to New Orleans’ Vulnerable Children and Families
Project Description:

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will provide general operating support that enables Educare New Orleans (ENO) to provide significant and effective services and programming to our children and their parents. Our program is rooted in our Theory of Change model, which is based on four core components: data utilization, embedded professional development, high-quality teaching practices and intensive family engagement. As a result, ENO has been able to maintain excellent results and transition students to kindergarten on grade level despite the many challenges that our children and families face. We are a full-day, year-round school serving 168 students ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. We also provide two-generational (sometimes three-generational) wrap around services to support parents and caregivers in reaching their personal goals. All of our students are Head Start/Early Head Start income eligible pursuant to the Federal HHS Poverty Guidelines. Annual household incomes are generally less than $20,000, and the vast majority of Educare New Orleans students are African American. Further, the majority of families are single-parent homes, and 90% of those homes are led by mothers as the primary caregiver. ENO’s early education model is holistic and intensive and utilizes an uncompromising focus on quality and parent engagement to empower our most vulnerable children and families to succeed and break the cycle of poverty. ENO has made great strides in early childhood outcomes. For example, there is a 54.6% increase to average or higher on a common early language assessment amongst children in our program who started below average. Further, evidence shows that children benefit from participation in our program almost immediately after starting. Over half of children who have been in the Educare program for less than one year, and started below average, increased their language assessment score.

Today’s Date: 3/3/2021
Requested Amount: $5,000

Project Title: LOI – Birthplace of Country Music General Operating Support
Project Description:

Birthplace of Country Music, Inc. (BCM) is comprised of three branches: The Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM), Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion Music Festival and Radio Bristol. Our mission is to perpetuate, promote, and celebrate Bristol’s rich musical heritage; to educate and engage audiences worldwide regarding the history, impact and legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions from which we derive our name; and to create recognition, opportunities, and economic benefit for our local and regional communities. BCM has become a cultural history destination with growing attendance yearly; has received numerous accolades, and has had, and is having, a major economic impact on the region.

We kindly request $5,000 towards the museum’s operating expenses which makes a tangible difference to our work as we strive to enable our staff to better direct expertise, time, and resources towards fulfilling the museum’s mission and delivering high-impact educational opportunities, meaningful programming, and engaging experiences to our community and visitors. The museum explores the history, technology, and legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, historic recordings that were integral to early commercial country music. Exhibits include a variety of experiences and a live working radio station with shows focused on regional music and history. Normally (pre-COVID) we offer educational programming (school visits, outreach, educational resources, professional development); public programs (film screenings, lectures/workshops, performances, family activities); discounted/free admission days and other free activities; and music camps for children. Our goal is to make programming and activities accessible to the residents of Bristol and our community by providing arts, culture, and humanities access that highlights the rich history and culture of the beginning of country music to a wide range of visitors from diverse backgrounds. In addition, our educational offerings support local and regional schools by providing engaging, hands-on experiences for all grade levels.

Total Project Budget: Total Museum Budget : $1,435,325

Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Birthplace of Country Music General Operating Support grant proposals for FY21. At this time no general operating support funding has been confirmed. Proposals submissions: Richard & Caroline T. Schumann Foundation, Wells Fargo Private Foundation – $15,000

Project Duration: Immediate
Geographical Area Served: The shared main street of the twin cities of Bristol, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee is located on the VA-TN state line, and the Birthplace of Country Music organization serves a diverse community in both cities (total population around 43,000). However, our reach goes much further into Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. For instance, in Virginia, we also work with the counties of Washington, Smyth, Russell, Wise, Dickenson, Scott, Lee, and Buchanan to bring groups to the museum, offer educational outreach experiences, and provide public programs. Bristol and the surrounding region have been hard hit by the decline in coal production and other industry lay-offs and closings. Therefore, our region is diversifying its economy and enhancing quality of life by reaching out to arts organizations and the tourism industry. Much of our audience lives in rural settings, and these areas are key outreach targets for our organization. The region includes numerous Title I schools, including students who are often underserved and disadvantaged; these are an important focus for BCM. The Appalachian Regional Commission classifies the counties in our region as ranging from “At Risk” to “Transitional.” We serve a wide variety of ages: seniors, adults and college students, K-12, and families.
Age Group To Be Served: It is our goal to make all things that we do accessible to the residents of Bristol. Through our programming and mission we serve a community of all ages, from adults to seniors to K-12 and college students. Our educational programming alone is primarily aimed to reach our local and regional schools in Bristol VA, Bristol TN, Washington County, VA, and Sullivan County TN, reaching approximately 1,600 teachers and 23,600 students. However, because we will work to also make the resources accessible virtually, we can potentially serve a much larger teacher/student population.

Project Title: Beds for Children
Project Description:

St. Vincent de Paul North Sound Council provides free beds to children of impoverished families in North Puget Sound, WA. Our goal is to be able to fulfill every request from our volunteers when they witness a child sleeping on anything but a mattress. A good night’s sleep is critical for growth and development, with your help, we will provide beds to children in need promoting over all wellbeing and support for low-income families.
FROM VISION TO ACTION A FRAMEWORK AND MEASURES TO MOBILIZE A CULTURE OF HEALTH “We have started to recognize that health and well-being can be greatly influenced by complex social factors: where we live, how we work, the soundness and safety of our surroundings, and the strength and resilience of our families and communities.” Copyright 2015. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/From Vision to Action: A Framework and Measures to Mobilize a Culture of Health. https://www.rwjf.org/en/cultureofhealth/about.html
We are helping parents create a home for their children, many times a new bed is too much for the parents’ budget. We received a call from a mom who had moved from a shelter and her and her three kids were all sharing an air mattress. We provided three new complete children’s beds and the local conference supplied a new bed for her along with a couch, with their funds.
The Beds for Children program has been since 2004, and we operate year-round, as we continue to receive funds, we provide new beds. The need for children’s beds continues, our help line has been open throughout this crisis and following safety protocols, our volunteers have coordinated with the Council office for parents to be able to pick up new beds. Over 200-trained volunteers in Snohomish County, WA carry out our mission, and have supplied 202 new free beds in FY 19-20.
