Project Title: Expanding Resources, Support, and Services for New Orleans’ Fatherless Boys
Project Description:
Son of a Saint is a Black-led nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of fatherless boys through mentorship, emotional support, development of life skills, exposure to constructive experiences and formation of positive, lasting peer-to-peer relationships. Our mission is to equip fatherless boys with the tools that they need to become productive men. We give them hope, vision, and opportunity through secure and consistent mentorship. Son of a Saint takes a holistic, individualized, and evidence-based approach to addressing fatherlessness. Each year, Son of a Saint selects a group of boys ages 10-12 to join the existing mentees in our program. Almost 83% of our mentees have lost their fathers to death or incarceration, and 12% have witnessed the murders of their own fathers. Within our program, 95% of our mentees identify as young men of color, and 80% live in low-income households. Son of a Saint employs a holistic approach that uses a network of volunteers and partner agencies that enable us to address every boy’s need. Each boy remains a Son of a Saint mentee until he is 18, but we continue to advise and support each mentee in the years that follow. Son of a Saint respectfully requests general operating funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation to support our programming for fatherless boys, a major component of which centers on the intersection of mental health, education, and mentorship. Students with mental health diagnoses and learning disorders are more likely to face suspension and expulsion and are less likely to graduate high school than their peers (Child Mind Institute, 2014). Son of a Saint intervenes early in fatherless boys’ lives offering trauma-focused, evidence-based individual and group counseling to prevent behavioral issues from manifesting that can negatively impact their interpersonal relationships, physical health, and academic performance.
