Project Title: Drumming With Dad
Project Description:
Drumming with Dad is a summer immersive parent engagement experience designed to provide opportunities for fathers to bond with their children and other fathers while learning the art of African drumming. Each session is held twice a week, morning and afternoon/evening, to accommodate the schedules of participating fathers.
Father engagement is a vital and integrated aspect of parent, family, and community engagement work (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services). Research shows that fathers tend to have a strong motivation to participate fully in their children’s lives. Drumming with Dad seeks to create a safe space for fathers (and male caregivers) to talk about the challenges and successes of fatherhood while using the drums as metaphors for the family and community. Participants learn the history of drumming and how to use drumming for artistic expression and social connection. Children learn and develop listening, communication, coordination, self-discipline, and cooperation skills. Fathers learn and develop the skills to bond with their children and create meaningful, enriching experiences with them.
CAMP DAD, a tandem three-day outdoor program, runs from Friday to Sunday and will be hosted at a campsite. Last year our camping program took place at Gifford Pinchot State Park in Wellsville, Pennsylvania. From sun-up to sundown fathers and their children ages 5 – 15 are immersed in nature exploration and skill-building activities including hiking, boating, swimming, and arts and crafts.
Collectively, our Drumming with Dad/CAMP DAD program aims to: (1) Increase fathers’ engagement in their children’s learning, (2) Strengthen parent-child relationships through skill-building and exploratory activities, (3) Provide a high quality outdoor recreational experience for underserved children and fathers who might otherwise not have access to such opportunities, and (4) Lay the foundation for program participants to become enthused stewards of community assets and natural resources.
