Project Title: Providing Early Support to New Orleans’ Vulnerable Children and Families
Project Description:

Funding from the Hermanowski Family Foundation will provide general operating support that enables Educare New Orleans (ENO) to provide significant and effective services and programming to our children and their parents. Our program is rooted in our Theory of Change model, which is based on four core components: data utilization, embedded professional development, high-quality teaching practices and intensive family engagement. As a result, ENO has been able to maintain excellent results and transition students to kindergarten on grade level despite the many challenges that our children and families face. We are a full-day, year-round school serving 168 students ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. We also provide two-generational (sometimes three-generational) wrap around services to support parents and caregivers in reaching their personal goals. All of our students are Head Start/Early Head Start income eligible pursuant to the Federal HHS Poverty Guidelines. Annual household incomes are generally less than $20,000, and the vast majority of Educare New Orleans students are African American. Further, the majority of families are single-parent homes, and 90% of those homes are led by mothers as the primary caregiver. ENO’s early education model is holistic and intensive and utilizes an uncompromising focus on quality and parent engagement to empower our most vulnerable children and families to succeed and break the cycle of poverty. ENO has made great strides in early childhood outcomes. For example, there is a 54.6% increase to average or higher on a common early language assessment amongst children in our program who started below average. Further, evidence shows that children benefit from participation in our program almost immediately after starting. Over half of children who have been in the Educare program for less than one year, and started below average, increased their language assessment score.
