Project Title: Full STEAM Ahead
Project Description:

The Boca Raton Children’s Museum exists to broaden children’s awareness of the world around them and teach them how to problem solve through creative and scientific exploration. It is a place that is preserving the “power of play” for our children in one of the oldest historical cottages in our community.

Experts in education all agree that there is a need for “play” and its influence on science, technology engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). It has been proven that exposure in these areas improves children’s ability to read and comprehend. We know there’s a gap in our educational systems ability to offer innovative and experiential learning opportunities especially for children coming from low income families. Many of our Museum patrons are defined by United Way as ALICE families, (Asset, Limited, Constrained, Income, Employed). They live pay check to pay check, and are one flat tire or one serious illness away from crisis. The Museum is a place that they can access the enrichment opportunities their children need to keep up with their peers.

At the Children’s Museum, children are encouraged to be active and interactive, utilizing their imaginations to try new things. The exhibits and activities tap into children’s natural curiosity and gives them ample chances to be participants in their own learning. It offers children almost unlimited ways to explore and investigate new skills creating a solid foundation for future learning. The Museum’s goal is to enhance exhibits to expose children to real life experiences. Let’s not wait another day to provide young children the opportunity they need to become tomorrow’s leaders. We are requesting $10,000 to enhance our exhibits and STEAM programming for children who need it most.

Project Title: Empower Me KidSafe
Project Description:

“KidSafe for Kids” –an 8-week curriculum designed for children in grades PreK4 – 5th grade. Children learn important safety skills through fun not fear, using developmentally appropriate techniques such as role play, song, art, discussion and the foundation’s two award winning children’s books; “My Body is Special and Belongs to Me!” and “Jack Teaches his Friends to be KidSafe!” (books available in English, Spanish & Creole)
2. KidSafe Parent Education to increase awareness, deliver knowledge and provide skills to parents to keep kids safe, educate about; red flag behaviors of adults, recognize red flag behaviors of children in need, reporting procedures, strategies for communication with children and teach the KidSafe Language of Safety.
3. KidSafe Teacher Workshop- Online Training -how to recognize children at risk for abuse, professional protocol, exact mandated reporting procedures and how to respond to disclosure. KidSafe educates on how to reinforce the use of KidSafe Prevention skills at school, and much more. This professional development seminar empowers teachers with awareness and skills which can be integrated into their everyday classroom management to best keep children safe.
Research strongly demonstrates that school-based education is key to successfully training children, parents, educators, school staff and professionals about sexual abuse prevention and protection. KidSafe’s active and interactive education techniques are highly effective in empowering children that they have the right to be safe, how to use their voice to keep themselves safe and how to access help when needed from a trusted adult. Most teachers and administrators lack formal training in recognizing, responding and reporting child sexual abuse. This education will have life-long impact, stretching over entire careers, and protecting thousands of children from abuse. The education we provide empowers educators and other professionals to assume their roles as advocates, prevention specialists, and mandatory reporters.

Project Title: Arc Broward Developmental Preschool
Project Description:

In 1956, a group of parents of children with disabilities found that no local preschools met their children’s unique needs. Committed to quality education for all, the parents founded Arc Broward as a place where their children could learn and thrive.

That vision still drives us today. While we now support 21 programs for infants through adults, our preschool continues to grow and thrive. With an enrollment of 60 children ages 18 months – 6 years, the preschool has grown to a community model for adapting the early learning experience for children with developmental disabilities (autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome) and complex physical, social, and behavioral needs. Each child in the program has an Individualized Service Plan, a guide map to meeting their unique needs and goals. Certified teachers and trained assistants ensure a low adult-to-child ratio (as low as 1 adult per 1 child). We weave developmental opportunities into each part of the day – from small group experiences and quiet activities to active play and multi-sensory learning. The robust daily schedule provides a range of opportunities for skills-building, fostering the development of fine and gross motor skills, communication, socialization, self-help, and problem solving. Our goal is for each child to graduate from the program ready to learn in kindergarten.

Working hand-in-hand with our teachers is our therapy team. Children receive intensive early intervention, including speech/language, occupational, physical, and behavioral therapy from licensed and certified practitioners. These professionals work closely with the teachers to adapt classroom activities for the needs of individual children.

While Arc Broward receives funding from Broward County Public Schools and The Batchelor Foundation, our cost exceeds the expense of providing such individualized programming. Support from The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation would offset the cost to provide these critical services.

Requested Amount: $5,500

Project Title: Canine Comfort
Project Description:

Pet therapy is in high demand in South Florida. Many children could benefit from the therapeutic interactions with therapy dogs. Canine Assisted Therapy continues to receive calls on a daily basis from schools and other child/youth facilities. Our therapy dogs work with pediatric cancer patients, youth in dependency court, children with special needs, disadvantaged youth, children in shelters and children struggling with literacy skills. We would like to request grant funds to help us continue to provide pet therapy to children as well as to train and certify new pet therapy teams.

Canine Assisted Therapy is approaching our 10th anniversary and some of our current pet therapy teams have been with us from the beginning. It is heartbreaking as we lost so many of our therapy dogs last year due to declining health, death and retirement. It is always a struggle to continually recruit and train new therapy teams to keep up with the attrition of losing teams to death, relocation, retirement and bad health.

Canine Assisted Therapy has provided pet therapy to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; Sandy Pines; Katz Hillel Day School; Kayz Yeshiva High School of South Florida; Jupiter Middle School; Pediatric Associates of Boca; Loggers Run Middle School; Broward County School Board; Broward Children’s Center; Pompano Beach Elementary; Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center; ARC Broward; Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center; 17th Judicial District Dependency Court; Ronald McDonald House; Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health; and Memorial South just to name a few. We will also be serving additional facilities that are on a waiting list.

Project Title: Children’s Cancer Navigation
Project Description:

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, their days quickly fill with treatments & doctor visits. Their parents are forced to analyze overwhelming amounts of information to achieve the best outcome for their child, remission. This always involves a myriad of medical specialties & procedures. Low-income & non-English speaking families face greater obstacles achieving positive outcomes due to language barriers when receiving & providing pertinent medical information to doctors & hospitals on behalf of their child.

Cancer care and survival rates have vastly improved over the years. However, it has come at a high price. Even families fortunate enough to have comprehensive health insurance struggle with extremely high deductibles, prescriptions costs, & innumerable out-of-pocket & un-covered expenses. When you also consider that one parent usually must quit their full-time job to care for their sick child, as this is often what is necessary, it is not surprising that families often find themselves in severe financial crisis & on the verge of homelessness. A 2013 study by the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that families with a child stricken with cancer were 2.5 times more likely to declare bankruptcy, as average treatment costs can easily reach $100,000 or more EACH YEAR.

Astoundingly, the 3rd largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer in the state of Florida resides in Palm Beach County. Consequently, 70% of our clients are children stricken with cancer. Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope (CAHH) strongly advocates for each child client throughout treatment & beyond. We work collaboratively with the child’s family, medical team & through outreach to local, state, & national resources to ensure that each child’s needs are met. Our method of coordinating education & support is critical & has been shown to increase the child’s quality of life AND overall chance of recovery & survival.

Project Title: Haitian Early Learning & Enrichment Program (HELE Program)
Project Description:

Funding is requested to prepare Haitian children for success in school, particularly families most at risk, and to build strong character traits in students. The HELE Program will academically prepare ten (10) 4 yr. old children for Kindergarten and it will provide academic enrichment & tutoring for 25 children in grades K-6.
Although many Haitian parents are eager for their children to obtain a good education, many of HTPB’s client population are un/undereducated and therefore lack the knowledge, direction and resources to encourage and assist them. HTPB is one of the few resource centers in PBC that targets the Haitian community and provides culturally and language sensitive services.
The HELE Program has 2 components:
1) an on-going PK 4 Program to prepare Haitian children for Kindergarten. Not all schools in PBC have a PK4 program and many have limited space. Most Haitian families cannot afford a private program. Most immigrant children who enter Kindergarten without having been enrolled in a PK 4 program are academically disadvantaged, translating into poor academics that escalate each year. The HELE PK4 class will meet 3 hours/day x 5 days/week.
2) an on-going afterschool Enrichment & Tutoring Program for 25 students in grades K-6, with an emphasis on children in grades K – 3 to encourage a solid foundation as early as possible. These children will attend the enrichment program 2 days/week during the academic school year for 1:1 or small group tutoring. The focus is on grade level academics, homework assistance, subject areas of poor performance, and health education, with emphasis on character building & social concerns to instill responsibility and respect for themselves and others. The teacher will work with students, their parents and the school system to improve communication and involvement of the parents in the child’s education.

Project Title: Books for Babies: Sharing Books Beginning at Birth
Project Description:

Too many children enter kindergarten without the basic language and pre-literacy skills they need for normal progression through and success in school. Only 34.6% of Connecticut children entering kindergarten demonstrate level 3 literacy skills and require little or no intervention. (CT Department of Education, 2016-17).

Kindergarten children who do not have level 3 literacy skills are already behind.

Read to Grow provides literacy information and free children’s books to Connecticut families. We are requesting support for the Books for Babies (BFB) program.

The BFB program provides new board books to over 60% of all newborns in the state and early literacy guides to their parents through 14 hospital partners. Volunteers, trained by Read to Grow, visit families on the maternity unit to explain the ways parents can encourage literacy and language development by regularly reading aloud, talking, and singing to their babies.
• BFB Sibling Books provides books for siblings of babies born in our partner hospitals.
• BFB Follow-up mails new developmentally appropriate books and literacy brochures to families that register, when their babies are 3 months old and 12 months old.

We encourage parents to start the healthy habit of sharing books, talking and singing to their babies daily, beginning at birth.
“Studies have shown that the children who come to kindergarten best equipped to learn to read have been read to — on average — nearly 1700 hours between birth and kindergarten,” (Halvorson, 2013).

Last year (period ending 6/30/17), 20,900 families of newborns received literacy packets, 5,138 siblings received books and 4,134 families registered for Follow-up. Nearly 1,100 families who registered for Follow-up responded to surveys which revealed: 95% read the new baby board books in the literacy packets to their babies, 84% talk to their babies often and 66% read to their babies at least once a day.

Project Title: Inside Out Counseling
Project Description:

Since 2002, the ReadyKids Inside Out Counseling program, has offered an immediate response to treatment needs of children who have been abused, neglected or exposed to family violence in Charlottesville and the five surrounding counties. Inside Out offers masters-level counseling services to children and adolescents ages 2-18 years (Note: In FY17, more than 80% of clients served were low-income and likely would not have been able to access counseling services elsewhere due to financial barriers). Inside Out Counseling specializes in clinical assessment, specialized individual and family counseling, and outreach services.

There is an urgent and growing need for Inside Out services. With 1,959 accepted reports in the ReadyKids service area (see Table One), there is a clear and demonstrated demand for affordable treatment options for victims of child abuse and neglect. Over the last five years, Inside Out has consistently maintained a wait list for children needing individual counseling services. To alleviate the delay, kids placed on the wait-list are invited to attend a weekly skills group while they wait for individual appointment times. Over the past 6 months alone, Inside Out has received an average of four phone calls each week from caregivers or professionals looking for available counseling options. Many of the referrals have been for children younger than 12 years of age, with significant mental health, behavioral, and family issues. Many of these children are at risk of out of school placement due to extreme behaviors that go beyond the scope of what the schools are equipped to manage.

By investing in treatment for children early, the state saves money in the long-term. The Center for Disease Control estimated $210,012 per victim to be the lifetime burden of child maltreatment. This includes immediate costs, as well as loss of productivity and increased healthcare costs in adulthood.

Total Project Budget: $525,432

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): Inside Out is funded by a combination of state grants, private grants and private contributions. In addition, the program receives match funds from the local governments of Charlottesville, Albemarle and Fluvanna. FY19 committed funding includes: State (VOCA, DCJS, VSDVVF), Local Government (City of Charlottesville, Albemarle) and Private Foundation (Murlan). Pending funding includes: Community Foundations (CACF and LCCF) and Private Foudations (LEAW) and Private Contributions (Individuals).

Project Title: Children’s Services To Independence (CSTI
Project Description:

Children’s Services to Independence (CSTI) goal is for children to participate in critical rehabilitation, recreational, and education activities to maximize their development and self-sufficiency. CSTI serves 80 children under 13 years old and their parents, who live in Broward County. LHOB’s Bright Beginnings Early Intervention Program supports 30 of the children whose ages range from birth through 5 years old. The remaining 50 are children, ages 6 – 13 obtain services through LHOB’s KIDS (Keys to Independence) Program.

Babies and toddlers in Bright Beginnings receive training and support that helps them reach critical developmental stages and prepare for kindergarten. They participate in play therapy to achieve individual goals focusing on eight (8) specific areas: cognitive, language, vision, compensatory, socialization, self-help, fine and gross motor skills. Older children in KIDS participate in year-round recreational activities and classroom experiences to learn safe travel skills, age-appropriate cooking and self-care techniques, Braille, use of computers, and polite social interaction and self-advocacy.

Many children in CSTI have additional handicapping conditions, which determines the special needs program services they receive in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Due to the criteria, children who are blind or visually impaired may not be placed in the BCPS Program for the Visually Impaired. CSTI fills the gap to ensure all children with a severe vision impairment achieve academic and life success. CSTI case managers develop an individual plan for each child with input from their parents and family therapists that will address the child’s needs including the services and equipment necessary for educational and social progression.
