Project Title: Canine Comfort
Project Description:
Pet therapy is in high demand in South Florida. Many children could benefit from the therapeutic interactions with therapy dogs. Canine Assisted Therapy continues to receive calls on a daily basis from schools and other child/youth facilities. Our therapy dogs work with pediatric cancer patients, youth in dependency court, children with special needs, disadvantaged youth, children in shelters and children struggling with literacy skills. We would like to request grant funds to help us continue to provide pet therapy to children as well as to train and certify new pet therapy teams.
Canine Assisted Therapy is approaching our 10th anniversary and some of our current pet therapy teams have been with us from the beginning. It is heartbreaking as we lost so many of our therapy dogs last year due to declining health, death and retirement. It is always a struggle to continually recruit and train new therapy teams to keep up with the attrition of losing teams to death, relocation, retirement and bad health.
Canine Assisted Therapy has provided pet therapy to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; Sandy Pines; Katz Hillel Day School; Kayz Yeshiva High School of South Florida; Jupiter Middle School; Pediatric Associates of Boca; Loggers Run Middle School; Broward County School Board; Broward Children’s Center; Pompano Beach Elementary; Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center; ARC Broward; Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center; 17th Judicial District Dependency Court; Ronald McDonald House; Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health; and Memorial South just to name a few. We will also be serving additional facilities that are on a waiting list.
