Project Title: Inside Out Counseling
Project Description:
Since 2002, the ReadyKids Inside Out Counseling program, has offered an immediate response to treatment needs of children who have been abused, neglected or exposed to family violence in Charlottesville and the five surrounding counties. Inside Out offers masters-level counseling services to children and adolescents ages 2-18 years (Note: In FY17, more than 80% of clients served were low-income and likely would not have been able to access counseling services elsewhere due to financial barriers). Inside Out Counseling specializes in clinical assessment, specialized individual and family counseling, and outreach services.
There is an urgent and growing need for Inside Out services. With 1,959 accepted reports in the ReadyKids service area (see Table One), there is a clear and demonstrated demand for affordable treatment options for victims of child abuse and neglect. Over the last five years, Inside Out has consistently maintained a wait list for children needing individual counseling services. To alleviate the delay, kids placed on the wait-list are invited to attend a weekly skills group while they wait for individual appointment times. Over the past 6 months alone, Inside Out has received an average of four phone calls each week from caregivers or professionals looking for available counseling options. Many of the referrals have been for children younger than 12 years of age, with significant mental health, behavioral, and family issues. Many of these children are at risk of out of school placement due to extreme behaviors that go beyond the scope of what the schools are equipped to manage.
By investing in treatment for children early, the state saves money in the long-term. The Center for Disease Control estimated $210,012 per victim to be the lifetime burden of child maltreatment. This includes immediate costs, as well as loss of productivity and increased healthcare costs in adulthood.
Total Project Budget: $525,432
