Project Title: Haitian Early Learning & Enrichment Program (HELE Program)
Project Description:

Funding is requested to prepare Haitian children for success in school, particularly families most at risk, and to build strong character traits in students. The HELE Program will academically prepare ten (10) 4 yr. old children for Kindergarten and it will provide academic enrichment & tutoring for 25 children in grades K-6.
Although many Haitian parents are eager for their children to obtain a good education, many of HTPB’s client population are un/undereducated and therefore lack the knowledge, direction and resources to encourage and assist them. HTPB is one of the few resource centers in PBC that targets the Haitian community and provides culturally and language sensitive services.
The HELE Program has 2 components:
1) an on-going PK 4 Program to prepare Haitian children for Kindergarten. Not all schools in PBC have a PK4 program and many have limited space. Most Haitian families cannot afford a private program. Most immigrant children who enter Kindergarten without having been enrolled in a PK 4 program are academically disadvantaged, translating into poor academics that escalate each year. The HELE PK4 class will meet 3 hours/day x 5 days/week.
2) an on-going afterschool Enrichment & Tutoring Program for 25 students in grades K-6, with an emphasis on children in grades K – 3 to encourage a solid foundation as early as possible. These children will attend the enrichment program 2 days/week during the academic school year for 1:1 or small group tutoring. The focus is on grade level academics, homework assistance, subject areas of poor performance, and health education, with emphasis on character building & social concerns to instill responsibility and respect for themselves and others. The teacher will work with students, their parents and the school system to improve communication and involvement of the parents in the child’s education.
