Project Title: CSJ Garden Ministry
Project Description:

One of the Sisters of St. Joseph’s most impactful ministries is CSJ Garden Ministry, a seven-acre community garden that consists of 24 raised-bed plots for local families, vegetable gardens, a wheat field, goats, chickens, and a barn. A central component of CSJ Garden Ministry is providing free environmental education for children and families. With a small staff (1.5 paid), these have been offered on a part-time basis. Even with limited staffing, CSJ Garden Ministry reached 739 children through environmental education programs in 2025 demonstrating both strong community interest and the need for expanded programming. In late 2025, we added a new full-time member to the staff – an Environmental Educator – with the goal of broadening our educational outreach to children in the wider community. With this new position, our objective is to provide environmental education to at least 1,300 children and adults.

Expanded programming will primarily serve children (ages 3 and older) and adults from the Suffolk County communities of Brentwood and Central Islip. Many participants are from immigrant families and face economic hardships. As residents of communities experiencing environmental injustice and high population density, they are disproportionately affected by pollution and have limited access to safe, natural green spaces. Through hands-on experiences in gardens, farmland, meadows, and woodlands, offered at CSJ Garden Ministry participants gain meaningful opportunities to connect with nature. Research has shown that time spent in natural environments promotes physical and mental well-being, supports children’s social and emotional development, reduces stress, and strengthens family relationships.

We envision offering environmental education throughout the year, with programs available on a 12-month basis. In addition to expanding school-year programming, we will continue our popular summer programs for children and intergenerational experiences that engage entire families. Should a grant be awarded by the Hermanowski Family Foundation, it will be applied toward a new position – Environmental Educator.

Total Project Budget: $85,150

Other Funding
Sources For The Project (Committed & Potential): William and Maude Pritchard Foundation – pending CSJ Ministry Fund – $10,000 Autumn fundraiser – To be held on 10/4/26 – expected to net $5000.

Project Title: Zeta Youth Empowerment & Leadership Development
Project Description:

Royal Doves, Inc., in partnership with the Upsilon Alpha Zeta Youth Auxiliaries, respectfully submits this request to The Charles and Joan Hermanowski Family Foundation in support of our Youth Empowerment and Leadership Development Program. This initiative directly aligns with the Foundation’s commitment to improving and transforming the lives of children and young adults up to age 21 by equipping them with the tools necessary to achieve their full potential.

Founded in 2018 in Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and surrounding South Florida communities, Royal Doves, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a proven history of girl-centered programming. We serve 20 young ladies ages 4 to 18, providing mentorship, life skills workshops, civic engagement, and leadership training to build confidence and character through young adulthood. Over 90% of our graduates enroll in college or trade school, supported by two to three scholarships awarded annually to graduating seniors.

The Upsilon Alpha Zeta Youth Auxiliary serves as a hands-on leadership laboratory where older participants plan events, lead initiatives, and model excellence for younger members. This intergenerational model complements structured workshops in financial literacy, public speaking, and college and career readiness, facilitated by professional volunteers committed to the next generation of women.

Our young ladies also participate in youth leadership conferences, gaining exposure to new ideas, networks, and possibilities beyond their immediate communities. Graduates consistently cite these experiences as pivotal moments in their development.

A grant of $5,000 from the Hermanowski Foundation will fund conference registration fees, professional attire, transportation, educational materials, facilitator stipends, and senior scholarships, ensuring every young lady has equitable access to all program opportunities regardless of financial circumstances.

Royal Doves, Inc. is cultivating confident, capable, and service-driven young women in South Florida. We are grateful for the Foundation’s consideration and its dedication to empowering children and young adults across the United States.

Requested Amount: 10,000

Project Title: TARR
Project Description:

Transcending Adolescence (TA) is a Jacksonville-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2019, dedicated to helping transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth ages 8 to 17 not only to survive, but to thrive. Our flagship program, the TA Resilience Retreat (TARR), is the only trans-specific sleepaway camp in the South, currently pursuing ACA accreditation that would make it the only accredited trans-specific sleepaway camp in the country. Through our SPEAR curriculum, Support, Physical Recreation, Empowerment, Advocacy, and Reflection, campers build community in a brave space alongside peers, junior staff who are themselves former campers, and adult TGD staff. A Yale University program analysis has confirmed measurable improvements in participants’ mental health outcomes. TGD youth face elevated rates of isolation, family rejection, and mental health crisis, and cost remains a real barrier for many of the families who most need TA’s programming. This request would fund campership scholarships, ensuring that economic hardship never prevents a young person from attending TARR. In 2026, TA served 24 registered campers with a projected total of 30 or more, supported by 8 junior staff, all former campers who have grown into TA’s next generation of leadership. With Hermanowski Family Foundation support, TA anticipates increased access to TARR for families facing financial hardship; measurable gains in campers’ sense of belonging, self-confidence, and reduced isolation; and continued strength of TA’s junior staff pipeline. Ensuring no financial barrier stands between a TGD young person and TARR is central to TA’s founding mission.
